BunTopia Rabbitry with Charlotte Charlotte is excited to start raising rabbits for 4-H / FFA kids in and around Fallon County. Netherland Dwarf and Lionhead as well as mixed meat breeds.

Luna and Nevel are in the second half of the first hutches. These two mini Rexs are beautiful but I dont think Nevel will ever be a daddy so might as well bond the two together. Luna is such a beautiful girl it would be awesome if we could get a litter out of her.

The new big hutches are now filled with bunnies!! The first hutch we put Hector and Blue together. These two are so cute together and they really enjoyed running around the space!

Charlotte is sending 2 junior bucks to New York state with Tim Grube! Tim and Mary Grube gave Charlotte 2 breeding does plus they bred Snowball, Charlotte's first market rabbit. Both these bucks are by Snowball and out of Blaire ( broken) and Red ( harlequin)

This summer Charlotte was fortunate enough to make more connections in the rabbit world! She was given a Silver Fox doe called Daisy. She was the last rabbit for her owners and they had these really cool big hutches that their rabbits lived in. Well long story short we brought the hutches home yesterday and Daisy gets to go back into her big home! Just have to do some small repairs and cleaning on them first!
Big thank you to Bill and Judy Whitney! Charlotte is so excited to have them!

Charlotte and I found out that fleshing hides is a time consuming process but so interesting as well. We are attempting to tan the hides from the 6 rabbits we processed. Hopefully we are successful and Charlotte wants to make something out of them.
The feet and tails are dehydrated and done save for making keychains out of them somehow. Another fun crafting project for her in the future.

Charlotte was very proud of herself for feeding her family tonight!
We cooked these 2 rabbits just like a roast chicken.
Stuffed the body cavities with onions.
Arranged them in my large dutch oven.
Drizzled melted butter with seasoning over each, added chicken stuffing in the middle and cooked at 350°F for about an hour and a half.
Pretty simple and very very good!! Also made gravy from the drippings.

I know its not the first thing that comes to most people's minds when rabbits are mentioned but Charlotte and I butchered rabbits this weekend. Despite the initial dispatch of each one Charlotte was hands on in the process. From skinning, to gutting to saving the hides so we can try our hands at tanning.
The 4 we processed yielded just over 13 pounds that is going in the freezer. I put the finished rabbits in chicken shrink bags I got off Amazon and they're a space saver in the freezer!
As soon as Charlotte and I figure out a time to cook them up she will have experienced every part of raising a market animal.
I am super proud of her and she turns 10 years old on Friday!!

At the conclusion of the Fallon County Fair we offered rabbit butchering services to kids that were needing a place for their market rabbits. We had a few takers for this and should get it done as soon as possible before the rabbits get to much older or before we all get so busy we dont have the time.
If kids/parents want to learn the process and have meat to take home all you need to bring is a small cooler of ice and the rabbit. Those who just want to learn the process, all thats needed is the rabbit and yourselves.
I will visit with the Extension office and see if kids can use this as an activity for their books if there is interest in that.
