The residents of Bark n Rest.
Update on who they are and their story.
Miss Fancy -She is the last remaining from our original group that started BnR. She is 13 years old now. We rescued her from the Fort Worth Texas shelter when she was 1 year old puppy. She has a neurological condition called Cerebellar Hypoplasia. It is a deformation of the cerebellum that controls movement. Many people do not understand the condition or the proper place for the care needs. She was an owner surrender. No worries! She has been with us 12 years and thriving! CH dogs can live long lives with proper environment adjustments. You would never know she is 13 years old. She still acts like a hyper happy puppy!
Miss Lilly Bell & Miss Tinker Bell- They are extremely bonded with each other! They do not like to be apart at all. Even if you are giving a bath, they both have to be in the sink together. They have to ride in same car seat together. They literally do every thing together and get stressed if out of sight from each other. They have been here almost a year. They came to us from a family in Oklahoma. We were contacted because the only owner they have ever known, died and the family did not want them at all. They are 8 years old, littermates and healthy. But they are lacking house manners. Both have many accidents inside, even though both are dog trained. That is more than likely why the family did not want them. More than likely, the elderly owner did not let them out and it has become a habit we are trying to correct. When I walked in to get them, the family had them in a small wicker cat bed that was up against the wall where they could not get out. They were obviously stressed and not happy. As soon as I turned the vat bed from the wall they jumped out on me, like help! Get us out of here! I did. It is so hard to not say anything when you see this kind of situation. I got the surrender form signed over and the micro chips changed onsite as they signed the forms. As I was loading them up in the car and the family loaded their belongings in the car, not once did they come say goodbye or acknowledge they were leaving for good! This owner was either the daughter or the husband's mother. I could not tell because they were so cold about it. Come to find out, I was picking them up the day AFTER the funeral! It was the coldest acting towards them I have ever seen. They did not even care. When I arrived and saw both, I said wait, you have 2? I was only contacted about Lilly Bell. They were going to put Tinker Bell down because she is obese! Uhh NO! I took them both! They did not care that they were bonded either. So, as I get in my car, they had the audacity to be fake and say oh keep us updated! So those that have followed our rescue know, I have a hard time being nice to people like this. I already had the papers signed, chips transferred and loaded in my car. I said, really? Why? You had them stuffed in a tiny cat bed with opening against the wall so they can not get out, you did not care that they were bonded, you did not even ask about Tinker Bell being taken, you just wanted to put her down because she is fat! Then you do not even acknowledge them leaving knowing, whichever of you are the family member of the deceased you are, hard to tell from the coldness from both of you. It is only the day after the funeral and you have already given them away. They were clearly not happy here. Look how their demeanor has already changed in the car away from y'all! We usually do give past owners family updates, but you can forget that. Not the way they have been treated. Then I drove off. Both of them are now thriving and happy again! They are pretty active. They love to play chase with each other. They chase each other from bed to be and crate to crate! Need to get that on video, It's cute!
Miss Scoobie - She has a heartbreaking story. Scoobie has been with us for 3 years. She is about 15 years old now. She only weighs about 2 pounds! Keep that in mind with the coming details. Scoobie was surrendered to us from the only owner she has known in her life. For years she had a happy normal life. Was healthy and able bodied before the abuse. We were told about a year prior to us getting her, the owners were getting a divorce and moving off to other states. Well, during the heated divorce, the husband at some point stomped on Scoobie's back! Yes, this tiny 2 pound senior dog had her back stomped on! Her spine is all funky and sticks up like a big hump. She is partially paralyzed. Has limited bladder & bowel control. She tries but can't hold it. Anyway, after the stomp, no one took her to the vet for care! The lady was a RN nurse. She KNEW what was going on injury wise! Well, she just puts Scoobie in the laundry room. Most times in the the dark with limited food and water! This part is gross, but dogs that have been left hungry will eat their own p**p out of fear it's all they have to eat. This is a hard habit to break when they are psychologically damaged like this. So she will try to eat it as fast as she can as if it;s her only meal. How sad! This was a dog that a year prior had 11 years of a normal happy life, then this? So we of course take her in. The former owner has not once called to check up on her and see how she is doing! Not really a shocker, but still sad every single time! She has our contact info. Rachel was the one that went and rescued Scoobie. I would have probably gone to jail seeing this abuse situation! The former owner moved off. Good riddance. No clue about the man. May karma pay him a harsh visit!
We take Scoobie to the vet ASAP. The damage is done and there is no fixing it. She doesn't appear to be in any pain. She sleeps most of the day. When she is up, she is out and about. Scoobie likes to wander about. Her back legs give out and drag sometimes, but it doesn't stop her. She goes to the food and water bowl on her own. She likes to participate in snack time with the other dogs. This did cause some neurological damage and with her age, sometimes she is not all there. She does have that old bones senior dog atrophy which appears worse due to her injury. She loves to go outside and sometimes kinda runs. Miss Scoobie is happy and thriving best she can for what time she has left. Her last part of life, she knows she matters!
These are the faces of Bark n Rest! They are all happy and thriving now!
