Why Digging Is Great Enrichment for Rabbits
1. Mental Stimulation
Digging gives rabbits a “job,” preventing boredom and reducing destructive behaviors like chewing, bar biting, or carpet digging.
2. Physical Exercise
It works their front legs, shoulders, and core great indoor exercise for buns.
3. Stress Relief
Digging is calming and helps release pent-up energy and frustration.
How to Set Up Safely:
Use: Clean play sand, large plastic bin (3–5” deep), mat underneath
Avoid: Clumping cat litter, scented sand, construction sand, fertilized soil
Extra Fun:
Hide treats, mix in hay, add cardboard tubes or chew toys for foraging.
Safety Tips:
Supervise initially, watch for sand ingestion, dust sensitivity, and keep it clean and dry. Some rabbits prefer shredded paper or dirt know your bunny’s personality!
