A couple miles down the road…..there are countless acres of central Florida Forestry. These areas house various predators including panthers, bobcats, coyotes, bears and all the wildlife which they consume. Our open homestead with small animals are easy food sources……so our LGD pack deters and defends our property against any vermin or predator that is looking for an easy meal.

The Anatolian shepherd originated from Turkey to protect pasture animals from becoming a predator buffet. They were bred to be powerful free thinkers that do not need a human command or interaction to do their jobs. They were bred to tolerate extreme climates and be loyal with a low prey drive and yet fierce protective instincts and a bite force that is one of the strongest among canines.

All the above reasons are why we chose the breed and will continue to learn about, advocate for and share our personal experiences with them on our small homestead. Would they protect more acreage? Of course! Are they perfectly content with less than 5 acres? Yes. They are a highly adaptable breed that do not judge their jobs by the “size”. They simply do the job.

And…….we still have more……so time to dump for round #2. 🤪

Are they aggressive?!?!

Truth is the Anatolian Shepherd is not “aggressive”. Instead they are powerful, intimidating and protective. Here you see the “vibe check” I have mentioned in previous posts.

We have our yard treated for bugs quarterly so our dogs know these guys. They know this routine. But this is the first time they have come back since we had all the babies as we avoid any extra chemical exposure during heat cycle and puppy time. Sophie is unsure whether or not these guys are actually “ok”. Her protective instincts stepped up a notch with her last round of babies. It is early morning, mid week so I am the only one here with our younger girls. You can feel the “vibe shift”. She absolutely wants to follow my “they are fine” instructions but she is free thinking…….and she is just not sure. So she keeps a very close watch. The guy with the backpack sprayer walking…..no threat so she leaves him alone. The machine rolling over her yard space spraying…..still not sure. I always stay outside when we have people on our property because I am the alpha. They have to look for me. They need my opinion as that helps them decide whether this is an “actual threat”. They will look to me with a “did you see that?!” look on their faces because I am the alpha but they are not blindly trusting.
