Your Cat’s emotional state is important to us, too.

When Cats feel more secure and comfortable, we can obtain more reliable clinical readings, better understand their true clinical picture and ultimately provide better care.

That’s why we encourage pre-visit preparation for every Cat. This can look different for each Cat, from making the carrier part of everyday life and keeping routines predictable to using synthetic feline pheromones, calming supplements, or veterinarian- prescription pre-visit medication.

You know your Cat best, and we’re here to help you find the approach that works for both of you. When booking your appointment, let us know if your Cat has struggled with the carrier, car travel or veterinary visits in the past. Many behaviors that do not fit neatly into our homes are completely natural for Cats. Scratching, for example, helps Cats stretch, maintain their claws, communicate through scent and visual marks, and feel secure in their territory.

The goal is not to stop the behavior, it is to understand the need behind it and provide an appropriate way for your Cat to meet that need.

If your Cat scratches the sofa, notice what they have chosen:
- Do they prefer a vertical or horizontal surface?
- What texture are they scratching?
- Where in the home is it located?

Place a sturdy scratcher with a similar orientation and texture beside that area. When your Cat uses it, immediately reinforce the behavior with something they value, such as a treat, play, gentle praise or affection if they enjoy it.

Avoid yelling, spraying water or physically forcing your Cat to use the scratcher. Punishment does not teach them what to do instead and may increase fear, frustration and stress.

Your Cat’s veterinary visit starts before you leave the house.

Cats can experience stressor stacking when a series of disruptions accumulates. Being awakened from a nap, eating at a different time, seeing the carrier appear, leaving familiar territory, traveling in the car and encountering unfamiliar sounds and scents can each add to the last.

By the time your Cat arrives for their exam, they may have fewer emotional reserves to manage anything additional which can lead to protective responses. Protective responses may look like hiding, freezing, refusing treats, trying to escape or defending themselves. These behaviors are not your Cat being difficult. This is communication that your Cat does not feel safe.

Preparation can reduce the number and intensity of stressors your Cat experiences.

Sometimes, the smallest changes can tell us the most.

Observing and tracking subtle changes in your Cat’s behavior and daily habits can play an important role in their overall health and wellbeing. Changes that may seem minor can sometimes be early indicators that something isn’t quite right.

Pay attention to changes from what’s normal for your individual Cat including:
• Decreased activity�• Changes in social interactions�• Increased hiding�• Changes in appetite or water intake�• Changes in litter box or elimination habits�• Changes in grooming�• Changes in breath or oral health

Did you know that by your Cat’s first birthday they’re roughly equivalent to 15 in human years? And 24 by their second birthday!

After those two years of life, a commonly used comparison is approximately four human years for every additional Cat year. That would make your 11-year-old Cat roughly equivalent to a 60-year-old human!

Of course, Cats don’t age according to a simple human-years formula. Feline life stages and individual health are much more meaningful when it comes to veterinary care.

Cats move through their life stages relatively quickly, which is one reason routine preventative care is so important. Regular wellness exams allow you and your veterinarian to establish your Cat’s individual baseline, monitor changes over time and adjust their care as their needs evolve.
