In celebration of Waste and Recycling Workers Week, GRC is highlighting our hometown recycling heroes!

Meet our hometown hero, Claudia Garcia! Claudia currently works as a Weighmaster at Sibelco's College Park facility, where she demonstrates tremendous dedication, a strong work ethic, and the utmost professionalism. Claudia has been a rock star for over 13 years—working everywhere from production to quality to the scale house. She’s always the first to jump in and help, and she is the first smiling face you see when you walk in the building. Claudia truly brightens everyone's day!

In celebration of Waste and Recycling Workers Week, GRC is highlighting our hometown recycling heroes!

Meet our hometown hero, Dilshad Mondegarian! She is an Associate at GHD and has served as Co-Chair of the Georgia Composting Council's Education/Communications Committee since 2024. Dilshad has been a GCC board member since 2025. She is one of the GCC's hardest workers and cheerleaders and is always thinking of ways she can lift up the composting industry and the Council. In 2023, after moving to Atlanta from Canada, Dilshad started a composting program at her 425+ unit condominium, making it one of the first in Midtown Atlanta to offer composting as a service. Since then the program participation has doubled and has diverted nearly 10,000 pounds of food scraps from the landfill!

In celebration of Waste and Recycling Workers Week, GRC is highlighting our hometown recycling heroes!

Meet our hometown hero, Brody King! Brody currently works as the Operations Manager at ERTH Products. He has served on the Georgia Composting Council's (GCC) Advocacy Committee since 2024 and as a GCC board member since 2025. Brody has been instrumental in getting the GCC up and running in its first few years as an organization. As Co-Chair of the Advocacy Committee, Brody has championed the GCC's legislative and policy work, coordinated legislative town halls, met with legislators, and brought key compost policy updates and actions to the Council. GCC President David Paull added, "The GCC is lucky to have Brody and wishes him a big congratulation on his upcoming wedding this summer!"

In celebration of Waste and Recycling Workers Week, GRC is highlighting our hometown recycling heroes!

Meet our hometown hero, Lisa Chesrown! As an Administrative Secretary for Hall County Resource Recovery, Lisa consistently brings a positive attitude, strong initiative, and a genuine passion for service to the department and the citizens of Hall County.

Beyond her daily responsibilities, Lisa has made it her mission to educate the community about the importance of reducing waste and protecting our environment. She partners with local schools, community groups, and organizations to promote sustainable habits, believing wholeheartedly that small actions can create meaningful change.

Throughout the year, Lisa visits numerous schools to teach students of all ages about the principles of “reduce, reuse, and recycle.” She helps students understand how much recyclable material passes through their schools each day and encourages administrators to implement or expand recycling programs. Her efforts have inspired many schools to take action and adopt new sustainability initiatives.

Lisa frequently hosts tours at the recycling center, guiding students, teachers, administrators, and parents through the collection and processing system. She explains how recycling works and why it matters for the health of our environment, our homes, and our community. One of the most rewarding outcomes for Lisa is seeing students take their knowledge home and motivate their families to recycle, or witnessing a school launch a new recycling program after her visit. Her enthusiasm is contagious, and her impact is far-reaching.

In celebration of Waste and Recycling Workers Week, GRC is highlighting our hometown recycling heroes!

Meet our hometown hero, Misty McBroom! As a Specialized Equipment Operator, Misty operates the shredder, excavator, dozer, compactor, off-road dump truck, and water truck for the City of Griffin's Shoal Creek Landfill and Solid Waste Department. In addition to ensuring the area is clean and helping customers, she loads the metal recycling bins while keeping a keen eye out for lithium ion batteries.

Starting as a scale house operator, she approached her manager two years ago wanting to become an operator, run equipment, and learn everything about how a landfill works. Since then, she's participated in all aspects of maintenance from blowing out filters to rotating the wheels on the compactor and even studied the D&O plans for the expansion. She participated in SWANA's Road-E-O for Heavy Equipment on the dozer and excavator. "She is definitely an asset and has become an outstanding all-around employee here for us at City of Griffin/Shoal Creek Landfill and for the City of Griffin Solid Waste Department. Misty is always willing to help others, volunteer, and most importantly, willing to learn." remarked James Estle, Landfill Superintendent.

The Certified Landfill Operator and grandmother-to-be, nicknamed The Queen of the Landfill, always goes above and beyond. She loves her life, people, and her job. Meet our hometown hero, Kris! Kris has worked at CompostNow for over four years and been the anchor for CompostNow's Atlanta Onsite team for the past year. He leads the team with humility, determination, and integrity. His continuous improvement mindset, collaborative approach to problem solving, and willingness to try new things, strengthens the team and entire market. Kris started working with CompostNow when he was 18 years old and has been in a lead role for the past two years. He spends his free time with his family and making automobile content online.

Meet our hometown hero, Liz Sharp! Liz is a Waste Reduction Intern with Athens-Clarke-County (ACC) Solid Waste Department. Whether she’s organizing the Vulture Festival, restocking Zero Waste Kits like a sustainability superhero, digging through waste sorts to save compostables from the landfill, or creating fun educational and social media content, Liz does it all with enthusiasm and a smile.
She’s always ready to jump in wherever needed, ask thoughtful questions, and bring fresh ideas to the team. Around the office, she’s known for her positive attitude, passion for the environment, and her impressive ability to get excited about both compost contamination data and cool bugs. "We’re lucky to have Liz on our team and so grateful for all the energy, creativity, and hard work she brings to waste reduction in our community!" remarked Denise Young, ACC Solid Waste Department.

In celebration of Waste and Recycling Workers Week, GRC is highlighting our hometown recycling heroes!

Meet our hometown heroes from Oconee County! This fabulous team of devoted Sanitation Site Attendants faithfully and proudly serves the residents of Oconee County, ensuring their waste and recycling needs are met. "From George, with 19 years, to Maria, our newbie and everyone in between, the attendants work tirelessly each day to staff and support our 4 Oconee County Waste and Recycling Sites and carry out not only those related tasks but all the other Keep Oconee County Beautiful initiatives like Tire and Bulky Item Amnesties, Secure You Load, and Proper Paint Disposal Education programs and more. We also recognize our other attendants from Rolland, Tovy, Caitlin, Sam, Jim and Charlotte as she retires, again! Thank you to these, and all Waste and Recycling Workers for all you do each day. Be safe and know that we recognize and appreciate you!" remarked Cindy Pritchard, Keep Oconee County Beautiful Commission Director. Also, special thanks to Cindy for her unwavering dedication to providing outstanding recycling services and environmental education programs in Oconee County.

In celebration of Waste and Recycling Workers Week, GRC is highlighting our hometown recycling heroes!

Meet our first hometown hero, Crystal Johnson! She became a Forsyth County Recycling Center Attendant in August 2024 after a long career in the oil industry and with the Shaklee Corporation. She is jokingly known as “the attendant who always needs more flyers” because whatever informational materials are being distributed, she seems to run out the fastest! Bringing a deep knowledge of recycling and sustainability to every customer interaction, Crystal always makes sure that everyone has the resources they need to make informed decisions.

Outside of work, Crystal serves as the Board Chair for Keep Forsyth County Beautiful (KFCB) where she has shown her love of preserving the environment by playing various roles over the past 20 years. She was named KFCB Volunteer of the Year in 2006 and an award was even named after her for “Individuals displaying long term commitment and support.” She has also volunteered with the Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce, Teacher Reuse Exchange, Meals by Grace, Baldridge Boys Lodge, and PTAs, as well as her Church and Ladies groups. "No matter what role Crystal plays in any organization, everyone soon knows that recycling and sustainability are not just buzz words to her, but a deeply felt part of her life’s mission," remarked Tammy Keaton, Manager of Environmental Program, Forsyth County Recycling & Solid Waste Department.
