Spraying pastures can help control weeds and improve grass growth, but timing and technique make a big difference in the outcome of the health of your grass!

Here are some practical tips:

🌱 1. Spray when weeds are actively growing
• The best time is spring and early summer when weeds are small and growing.
• Avoid spraying during drought, extreme heat, or right before rain, because the herbicides won’t work as well.

🌿 2. Identify the weeds FIRST.

Different herbicides work on different weeds. Common pasture weeds in our region are:
• Thistle
• Ragweed
• Buttercup
• Broomsedge

🧴 3. Choose the right herbicide.

Common pasture herbicides include:
• 2,4-D – good for many broadleaf weeds
• GrazonNext HL – strong on tough weeds like thistle
• Remedy Ultra – good for woody plants and brush

****Always, Always, Always read the label for grazing restrictions.

🚜 4. Mow first if weeds are tall
If weeds are very tall:
• Mow first
• Wait 2–3 weeks for regrowth (depending on weather conditions.)
• Then spray while weeds are young and tender

💧 5. Use the right spray mixture
• Add surfactant if the herbicide label recommends it (helps the spray stick to leaves).
• Calibrate your sprayer so you don’t over- or under-apply.
• More DOES NOT mean better in this scenario.

☀️ 6. Spray on the right day, with the best conditions.

Best conditions:
• 60–85°F
• Low wind (under 10 mph) preferably none.
• No rain for 6–24 hours depending on the product. (Read that label)

🐄 7. Protect livestock.

Many pasture herbicides do allow grazing, but some require waiting periods. Check the label, especially for hay cutting restrictions.

✨ Quick planting tips

🥔 Cut seed potatoes into pieces with 1–2 “eyes” each (if they’re large).
🕒 Let the cut pieces dry for about 24 hours before planting to prevent rot.
📏 Plant them 3–4 inches deep and 12 inches apart.
🌤 Put them in a spot with full sun and loose soil.
⛰ As they grow, hill soil around the stems to keep the potatoes covered.
