Given the horrific news about Gone Rogue Girls Rescue, I (Mor Spicer, current president & founder) want to say a few things about our very small and very young rescue...
We (our board of directors) choose not to do more than we can handle. We only ever have 1-3 animals at a time. Which causes us a lot of guilt - because we know the need is endless, and we wish we could do more...
That said, being over your head is no excuse for violence. Being bit, is no excuse for violence in retaliation. Rescues are supposed to be there for these individual animals at their lowest and worst moments... it's not always pretty, it's rarely fun, but you have to recognize your role as a steward, not a savior.
I am so sad about what has unfolded... but not at all surprised. I may have only been hands on in rescue for a couple years now, but I've been involved for over 2 decades in various ways... egomaniacs and humans who care more about getting credit for "being a good person" or for "saving lives" than they do about the individual animal needing their help - also need help. It is a genuine sickness, and it is sad that so many people suffer from this, and because of their suffering, they inflict suffering on the most vulnerable... I'm not spelling all of this out to excuse violence, I'm spelling it out so you can be aware and hold us and all rescues accountable if you sense animals are in harms way...
As far as our rescue is concerned, we are hoping to find foster families, so we can grow and be more helpful in this reality where so many animals fall through the cracks, or are taken before their time. Missy has our full attention, and will have it until she finds her furever, and even then we will be invested in her future and keep up with her and her new life.
Please don't be disheartened by the existence of such horror, instead take it upon yourself to be the light in the darkness. There are so many incredible rescues doing such amazing work - please support them when you can, with donations or encouragement, with fostering or adopting, with prayers or good vibes...
