The only rotation at Muscatatuck Training Center that didn’t involve live odor—ropes—and it might be my favorite.

Full transparency: heights aren’t my strength. But operational capability isn’t built inside comfort zones. This was our third vertical rotation with W Matney Rescue Training, and each time we tighten systems, improve communication, and execute cleaner under pressure.
doesn’t question the environment—he trusts the handler. That trust is built here.

Show up. Do the work. Get better.

closed out our Muscatatuck Training Center rotation on two separate rubble piles—compressing multiple high-complexity variables into a single operational environment.

Unstable footing, unfamiliar personnel, confined/dark spaces, and open voids all in play. Initial hesitation required handler support, but once committed, k9 Kane worked with purpose and clarity. As he enters the container, you can hear active odor processing—steady, methodical, and focused.

Confidence is built in the margins. Performance shows up when it counts.

Not every mission ends the way we train for.

In search and rescue, we often say, “so that others may live.” It’s what drives the long hours, the relentless training, and the commitment to show up—every single time.

But the truth is harder than the credo.

Sometimes, despite every skill, every resource, every ounce of effort… we don’t get that outcome.

That’s when “No one left behind”—Nemo resideo—becomes more than words. It becomes the promise we carry forward.

Nick — we miss you, little bro. We love you. We carry you with us. Always.

Continuing environmental socialization at Muscatatuck Training Center—this time from the water.

We ran boat-based search scenarios in a submerged village, working rooftop access from an airboat. For Kane, boats are high-value, so the objective shifted from exposure to control: managing arousal, maintaining task clarity, and sustaining odor commitment despite elevated drive.

Drive is an asset—control makes it operational.

K9 Darwin showed up ready to work at Muscatatuck 💪🐾

He put in solid work Friday morning before an upset stomach sidelined him for the rest of the trip—but even off duty, he made the most of it. Trading search work for snuggles with some pretty great company. (He is feeling much better now!)

One of my favorite things to do during detection is to listen to my dogs breathing. And with a boxer it’s always exaggerated.

Back at Muscatatuck Training Center with and K9 Darwin for another round of detection work 🔎🐾

This place delivers the kind of environmental socialization you just can’t replicate—complex, unpredictable, and exactly what these dogs need to level up. Third time here and it keeps getting better.

Bonus: getting to train alongside some of our favorite people.

Thank you, Debbie Triplett for putting on an excelllent event!

putting in the work in LA on the Hollywood stars ⭐️🐾

Fame, fortune, and distractions everywhere—camera crashing mid-track—and he still pushed through and got his man. That’s the level of focus and commitment we train for.

Angie, Darwin, and spent the day training in Canton 🐾

Human Remains Detection (HRD) dogs are capable of detecting buried remains, making them valuable assets in both clandestine investigations and archaeological or historic preservation efforts. However, like any operational skill, HRD requires consistent training to maintain accuracy and reliability.

Training in a cemetery presents a unique challenge—odor is everywhere. The dogs must work through a complex scent environment to identify the highest concentration of target odor. This can be frustrating for dogs accustomed to pinpointing a single, isolated source, but it’s exactly the kind of problem-solving that builds real-world operational proficiency.
