Don’t let the name scare you, Banshee is actually a total sweetheart.

He's 2 years old, weighs 58 pounds, and arrived at the shelter on September 25 after he was found roaming the Lilburn area all by himself. And once we got him in front of the camera, Banshee made one thing very clear: he is MUCH more interested in making friends than haunting anyone.

During his photoshoot, Banshee was very friendly, treat motivated, affectionate, and eager to show off his skills. He knows some basic commands and gave us some very good sits, especially when there was a treat involved. Smart? Absolutely. Food motivated? Without question. Affectionate? 100%.
Basically, Banshee has all the makings of a fantastic companion. He’s young, handsome, people-friendly, and apparently willing to work for snacks. What more could you ask for?

We’re hoping his next stop is a home where he gets plenty of love, plenty of treats, and absolutely ZERO reason to go wandering around Lilburn by himself again. Come meet him. Be sure to ask for ID #119892.

For the most up-to-date information on Banshee, give our kennel staff a call. He hasn’t been dog tested yet, and the cats have politely declined to participate in his character evaluation. Meet-and-greets are required.

In 1995, a movie came out called, “Powder.” It was a story about an exceptional young man with a stunning intellect and special abilities.

In the movie, there is a hunting scene where Powder places one hand upon a dying doe, and with the other hand, grabs the arm of the hunter who shot her. The hunter seized up- and in that moment felt everything the doe felt... all the pain and fear as her life slipped away. In the movie, he immediately gave up hunting. 🦌

If humans could feel what farm animals feel during slaughter- the unquenchable thirst, the endless hunger, the absolutely freezing or overwhelmingly hot temperatures inside overcrowded transportation trucks, being shouted at, hit, kicked, prodded, seeing the red horror covering the walls and floors, smelling the metallic tinge of blood in the air, hearing the terrified squeals of those around them, the deafening whir of the machinery coming to take their lives… 💔

If they felt all the terror and all the pain, if they could truly experience the suffering of slaughter, would they grasp their necks as their lives poured out? Would they try desperately to gulp clean air as their lungs filled with poison?

If they knew, we wonder, would they finally consider compassion? 🙏🏻🌱🐽❤️

The opossum is one of the few animals in North America that routinely eats venomous snakes and survives the bites. A protein in its blood called von Willebrand factor has mutated at the exact site where pit viper venom normally attaches, giving the opossum roughly a hundredfold increase in resistance over any other mammal its size.

In 1977, researchers injected opossums with 60 times the dose of rattlesnake venom known to kill a dog of similar weight. They monitored them for 30 days. Nothing happened.

Published prey records for the Virginia opossum include copperheads, cottonmouths, timber rattlesnakes, eastern diamondbacks, western diamondbacks, watersnakes, racers, milk snakes, ring-necked snakes, garter snakes, and brownsnakes. A 1954 Texas diet study found copperheads alone made up about 6 percent of opossum prey. A 1950 New York study found snakes of all species made up 19 percent.

The opossum grabs whatever part of the snake it reaches first and starts chewing right away.

The 2026 Edwards and Balchan paper documented an opossum spending 20 minutes working on a snake from the tail end without ever moving toward the head. It does not need to be careful about which end it starts with because the venom cannot hurt it. A copperhead biting an opossum on the face while being eaten alive is delivering a weapon that the opossum's blood neutralizes before it reaches any organ.

This happens every night across the eastern and central United States, wherever brush, cover, and water meet, and nobody sees it because the opossum is nocturnal. The animal's body temperature runs 94 to 97 degrees, low enough that rabies rarely takes hold because the virus struggles to replicate in a cool host. It has 50 teeth, more than any other North American land mammal, arranged in a jaw built to grip struggling prey and not let go.

The widely repeated claim that a single opossum eats 5,000 ticks per season came from a 2009 Cary Institute study that extrapolated from laboratory grooming trials, and subsequent field research has not confirmed the number.

An opossum living under a porch, a deck, or a crawl space is patrolling the property between midnight and dawn, eating the snakes it encounters along the foundation, the garden edges, and the gaps where the lawn meets the brush.

Leave the opossums to be your backyard cleanup!
