While working today I was thankful for equipment that allows us to perform dental work without discomfort and with a level of precision not previously possible. This is a picture of my ‘required’ equipment. I have much more - but most dental equilibration can be performed with this. I thought I would explain each piece, and why it is necessary. 1. Low profile disc. Permits addressing individual teeth - without touching the tooth next to it. Guarded (to prevent oral trauma), and requires less opening of the mouth. 2. Buccal burr - allows reduction of points without removing occlusal surface. 3. Allows fine profiling of First molars & canines. 4. For incisor equilibration. 5. To remove tartar from canines. 6. Well made speculum for complete exam. 7. LED headlight to view all teeth.

I cannot say it enough- a complete oral exam is critical!!! This requires sedation, a speculum and a bright light. It simply cannot be performed correctly without this. This horse was on the schedule for a routine (yearly) dental. He had a Sagittal fracture of tooth #107 that required extraction. He was extremely painful.

Does your horse need a yearly dental exam…. YES!!! This large ulcer on the lower part of the tongue is one example of why. **Sedated, with a speculum and a bright light. ‘Natural’ exams without a speculum and light are NOT adequate.

Our panel has chosen TWO families this time for our Be The Change Blessing!!! One is a couple whose husband has had major heart surgery and cannot return to work. The Blessing will help with mortgage, etc. The second is a family whose 4 year old is being treated (out of state) for a brain tumor. They have so many needs.
I thank Dr Holly Breaux & Dr Robin Barrow for joining me in this initiative.

I am thrilled to announce that we have chosen our first family for our 'Be the Change' initiative! It was so incredibly difficult for the panel to choose, all the nominees were in need. Those nominees that did not get gifted this time will go back into the mix for the next Blessing.
The family that received the Blessing is an older couple suffering from multiple health problems. This Blessing will help with groceries and bills.
In addition to the $1000, a very generous client added $100 to the Blessing!

We are excited to share a new Philanthropic Initiative that we are implementing as part of our practice. Dr. Holly Breaux will be joining me in this initiative!!!! Starting JULY 1, we will be setting aside $5 from every horse treated. Once the total reaches $1000, we will donate the amount to a person or family in need within our community. Nominations for recipients are welcome, and a panel of three individuals will be responsible for selecting who receives each $1000 gift. We also want to invite anyone interested in donating to this cause; 100% of the contributions will go directly toward supporting those in need. For full transparency, we will publicly announce the recipients of each gift, ensuring that sensitive information is kept private.
Additionally, we welcome local businesses to join us in this venture. If you would like to participate or learn more, please reach out to me via private messenger.

Young Horse Dentistry…. The incisors (front teeth) are easy to see- IF you look! This beautiful 3 yr old has a displaced incisor due to crowding. There is a small window where this can be easily corrected by cutting some enamel off of the adjacent deciduous (baby) tooth. Please check your young horses incisors regularly!!
