Hello Everyone! I Hope you are all having a wonderful summer! I thought I would do another one of my week long trivia deals! This week I am going to be showing you animals you never knew existed! I hope you enjoy seeing some of the crazier members of the animal kingdom! Here we go!

Let's start with the Gerenuk!
The gerenuk, whose name means “giraffe-necked” in the Somali language, is an exceptionally long-necked antelope. The gerenuk's head is small for its size, but its eyes and ears are large. Gerenuks feed at higher reaches than most other gazelles and antelopes. They stand erect on their hind legs, with their long necks extended, to browse on tall bushes. By using their front legs to pull down higher branches, they can reach leaves 6 to 8 feet off the ground. The tender leaves and shoots of prickly bushes make up most of their diet, along with a nutritious mix of buds, flowers, fruit, and climbing plants. They do not eat grass and do not require water. They can get enough moisture from the plant life they eat and can survive in dry thornbush country and even in desert. One could say the Gerenuk is a kind of gazelle, giraffe hybrid!

Now swordfish for Karen!
Did you know:
1.Swordfish live throughout much of the world's oceans. They are found in the Indian, Atlantic, Pacific Oceans. They seem to prefer warmer waters, but are found at a variety of temperatures. They will generally migrate to warmer waters in winter and cooler waters in the summer. They can be found at varying depths in the ocean as well, including the surface where they sometimes jump out of the water in an activity called breaching.
2. Swordfish are big fish. The females are quite a bit larger than the males. The largest swordfish ever caught weighed 1,182 pounds. It's believed that they may grow as large as 14 feet long and 1,400 pounds.
3. Besides their long bill and large size, swordfish have a large crescent shaped tail (caudal) fin, a tall front dorsal fin, a second much smaller dorsal fin, and pectoral fins. They have large eyes and no teeth. The top of their body is silvery gray-blue to brown while the bottom or belly is cream colored.
4. Swordfish are carnivores and eat other ocean fish such as bluefish, mackerel, hake, and herring as well as squid and octopus. They may eat smaller fish whole, but attack larger fish by slashing at them with their sharp bill and then eating them. Swordfish must eat daily and use their great speed to catch other fish. They can swim at speeds of up to 50 miles per hour.
5. Swordfish are a popular game fish as they are large and strong swimmers, so they present a challenge to the fisherman. They are also a popular food served in many restaurants. Because of this there has been overfishing in some areas especially near the coast. Also, most swordfish caught today are smaller, typically 100 to 200 pounds. This is likely due to overfishing.

Hello everyone! I am terribly sorry I did not give any trivia yesterday! I will make up for it today and post twice! First narwhals for Shannon!
Did you know:
1. Monodon monoceros. The binomial name of the narwhal has been derived from its genus (Monodon) and species (M. monoceros). The binomial name means 'one tooth, one horn', an accurate representation of the narwhal due to the fact that it has one tooth (or horn) that is shaped like that of a unicorn tusk.
2. The body of the narwhal is normally speckled with a pale brown color. As narwhals mature, their skin becomes a bluish-grey color and their spots often turn white.
3. The narwhal prefer temperatures that are quite frigid. As a result, the narwhal can be found in the cold waters of the Canadian and Russian Arctic, northern and coastal regions of Greenland, northern Scandinavia, and around the Canadian locations of Davis Strait and Baffin Bay. They have also been found in the deep waters of Hudson Bay, Hudson Strait, and Foxe Basin.
4. The only other whale in this family is the beluga. Some marine biologists have placed the beluga whale in a different genus and believe the narwhal is in a genus of its own. Other than the beluga whale, the only other marine species that may be related to the narwhal is the Irrawaddy Dolphin.
5. The function of the narwhal tusk has often been the subject of debate between scientists. Some believe that it used for piercing ice caps that cover a narwhal's winter habitat. Others believe that the tusk is used for echolocation. More recent scientific studies have shown that the tusk is primarily used in courtship. The tusk has a unique twisting shape, often resembling that of a unicorn horn. Prior to the 19th Century, the narwhal was seen as an legend like that of the unicorn as travel to Northern regions of the world was nearly impossible. One last unique feature of the narwhal is that its tusk does not grow back when it breaks off. The narwhal tusk is strong and comparable to an elephant tusk (which also does not grow back if it breaks off).
