After your bags are packed, and your pet sitter is booked, it’s time to think about preparing your pets and your home for the pet sitter.

By planning ahead and leaving clear cat-sitting and dog-sitting instructions, you’ll make it easy for your sitter to give your pets the best “staycation” possible.

1. Walk through your home and put away items that your dog or cat shouldn’t have access to. Close doors to rooms where you don’t want pets wandering, such as children’s bedrooms.

2. Put away items that your dog or cat may consider an enticing but unacceptable chew toys, such as shoes, charger cords, or tv remotes.

3. Hang your dog’s leash, harness, and other walking gear (like extra poo bags!) where your pet sitter can easily see and grab them for daily walks.

4. Have toys easily accessible, and make sure your pet sitter knows which toys can be left out for your pet and which should only be used with supervision.

5. Make sure your pet’s food is fully stocked before you leave. To make it easier on your pet sitter, consider pre-portioning meals in containers kept in the pantry, cupboard, or refrigerator. If your pet eats their meals from interactive puzzle toys, prepping these ahead of time (and keeping them in the freezer if needed) means they’re easy to grab and give!

Every cat owner knows how hard it can be to give cats medications.

It doesn’t always have to be stressful or dangerous — with a bit of preparation and training, your cat can take their meds like a champ.

- Pick a food your cat likes — wet cat food, baby food (onion/garlic free), plain Greek yogurt, pureed squeezable treats, or some other cat-safe puree.

- The food must be smelly enough to mask the smell of the medication.

- Do this when your cat is hungry and only offer a small portion (so they don’t stop eating before finishing the medication).

Why Is My Dog Whining?

Your dog may be in pain. Pain or discomfort can cause a dog to whine. This may happen after an acute injury or due to chronic discomfort or pain that becomes worse over time.

Your dog may feel anxious, scared, or stressed.

Your dog is alerting you to something. Your dog may whine when they hear, smell, or see something that they feel you should know about.

Your dog is excited. Whining can be a result of “high arousal,” or a high level of excitement.

Your dog wants something or is frustrated. Many dogs will whine when they can’t reach their favorite toy that’s rolled under the couch and is just out of reach.

In some cases, however, it can become a demanding behavior, just as barking can be. A dog might have learned that whining gets them attention and will start whining when they want you to pay attention to them, no matter if you’re busy doing something else.

How to Train a Puppy to Walk on a Leash

Silky Leash

This game introduces your puppy to how the leash tells them which way to go. Start inside your home and be ready with some of your pup’s favorite treats.

- Clip the leash onto their collar or harness.
- Hold the leash on one side of your puppy and apply very light pressure* in that direction.
- If your puppy moves in the direction of the leash pressure, even if it’s just leaning that way or one step, say yes (or click if you’re clicker training) and give them a treat.
- Switch the leash to the opposite side and repeat.
