When it comes to chilled semen shipments, the stud dog is only part of the equation. The quality of the collection can have just as much impact on the outcome.
Over the past several months, Ive heard from more and more breeders who received chilled shipments that simply weren’t what they expected & needed a “emergency” shipment from one of my boys. In all these cases, the collection was performed without a professional semen evaluation before it was shipped.
A successful shipment isn’t just about collecting semen and putting it on a FedEx truck. It’s about knowing exactly what you’re sending.
A reproductive veterinarian or theriogenologist doesn’t simply collect semen they evaluate the sample before it leaves. They assess concentration, motility, progressive motility, morphology, and overall quality, helping identify potential concerns before the shipment is ever on its way.
Could a DIY collection result in a successful breeding? Absolutely.
