Hey folks! Inky and Dinky here… Well, Inky here. Dinky is either lounging in the hay loft or roaming the new digs. Just wanted to let you know that we are all settled into our new farm in Glen Allen! After a couple weeks in a large crate, we were going stir crazy 😵‍💫 and couldn't wait to get out! We heard the humans talking about us staying contained so we wouldn't run away, but honestly, we never considered that! We have new territory to patrol and we love our new barn! It's safe and comfortable. By the way, if you're coming out to meet the horses, you get to meet us too! It's a win-win!

PS - Will work for treats!

🐴LOLA🐴 showed off her willingness and intelligence on Sunday working with our trainer Ashley - and she’s looking for her forever home!

Lola is a petite, 7-year old, 14h Saddlebred pony cross mare who just wants to be your best friend. She has potential as a riding horse and we know she’s GREAT at in-hand work and obstacles. We haven’t backed her yet but hope to do that soon.

Our volunteers observed Lola’s session today and here’s how they described her:
- Quick learner
- Checks in
- Likes people
- Calm
- Smart
- Sweet
- Joins up quickly
- Wants someone who’s willing to take their time with her

Lola has been in mixed herds and does fine with both mares and geldings. She is a gentle leader in the field.

Lola is easy to catch, great for grooming and hoofcare, stands well for the vet and farrier, and is just an all around great gal!

If you’re looking for a pony like Lola and you’re willing to be patient and kind, then submit an application for her today! https://www.virginiaequinewelfare.org/team-6

Thank you to our friends, family, volunteers and past adopters who came out to support our open house yesterday! We were able to show off the horses, including Twix, our extremely skinny animal control intake, who is getting a little stronger each day. We were so glad to have y’all out and enjoy a beautiful day. Thank you for being a part of the VEWS family!

We have 7! Count 'em,7! Seven horses available for adoption! Now that the dust has settled after our move to our new barn, we are chomping at the bit to find these horses a forever home.

Glory, Sonny, and Dutch are with our training partners, Equine Welfare Society, in Keswick. Billy, Wyatt, Lola, and Eliza Jane are at our barn in Glen Allen. We can walk you through the adoption process, give you more details about each horse, and answer any questions. Interested? WE ARE IN NEED OF VOLUNTEERS FOR OUR RESCUE BARN IN GLEN ALLEN, VA! We have lots of shifts, but we really need people on Tuesday AM, Tuesday PM, Thursday AM, and Friday PM!

VEWS volunteers commit to one barn shift per week, where we feed, groom, and hand-walk our horses - and of course, clean up after them. We have an AM and a PM shift 7 days per week, so you can pick the day and time that works best for your schedule.

Here are some reasons our current volunteers joined VEWS:
- They rode when they were young and have always loved horses, but can’t/don’t ride anymore.
- They want to do something physical away from home.
- Their friend told them how much they love volunteering at VEWS and they wanted to get involved, too.
- They had never touched a horse and wanted to learn how to work with these beautiful animals.
- They are retired and wanted to do something that benefitted animals.

If any of these reasons speak to you, we’d love for you to fill out a volunteer application! New volunteers attend Orientation on back-to-back Sundays before joining their regular shift. Our next Orientation days will be June 7th and June 14th at 2-6:30pm both days.

Look how beautiful our new Seating & Greeting area is! Thank you so much to Leslie, Jeannie, Bonnie, Shirley and Lisa P for donating time and materials to create this little oasis! Thank you, also, to Jubilant Gardens for donating some gorgeous flowers! It takes a village to run a rescue - and our village is second to none🥰 We look forward to welcoming our future adopters in this cozy spot. With seven adoptable horses (4 in Glen Allen and 3 in Keswick), we’re ready to start hosting adoption visits. Who wants to be first?? 🤩

Please join us in celebrating SueAnn Wheeler, VEWS Volunteer of the Month for June!

SueAnn has been a VEWS volunteer since September 2024 and currently serves as the back up shift lead on our Tuesday evening shift. SueAnn's co-lead shared the following comments: ""I am thrilled to recognize SueAnn as VEWS Volunteer of the Month! As a highly dedicated backup shift leader, she is always ready to step in when needed, offering steady support to both our horses and our team. Her calm, reassuring presence makes an incredible difference—especially to our horses who rely on calm, confident handling. She is my go to for handling some of our more sassy horses.

Whether she’s guiding a shift, soothing a nervous horse, or lending a hand wherever it’s needed, SueAnn brings a sense of peace and reliability that we deeply appreciate. Her commitment helps ensure that every horse receives the best care, comfort, and compassion they deserve."

Thank you, SueAnn, for all you do for VEWS and VEWS horses!

In SueAnn's words: "I’m 25 and from midlothian VA. I started riding when I was 5 in the hunter/jumper world. I continued to ride and work with horses through high school and got the opportunity to ride for my college team at LSU. After school I went and worked with horses out in Wyoming. My favorite part of volunteering with VEWS is watching the horses develop mentally, physically, and socially."

🐴LOLA🐴 is ready to find her forever human!

Breed: Saddlebred Cross pony mare
Age: 7 years old
Height: 14h
Available as: Companion, in-hand obstacles/groundwork, potential as riding pony
Adoption fee: $1,000

Beautiful, kind, easy to handle Lola is looking for a forever home. Lola is blind in her left eye but is not reactive or spooky on that side. She's a very good mare for leading, grooming, hoof care, farrier and vet. Lunges like a pro and teaches our volunteers how to lunge a horse. Lola is healthy and sound with potential as a riding pony. She will continue to be worked under saddle but we know at this time that she will need an experienced rider or trainer to continue her progress as a riding mount. Want a gorgeous mare who has her whole life ahead of her? Please complete an Adoption Application today! https://www.jotform.com/260125070496049
