Last week, we had an unannounced USDA inspection at our cattery.
Unannounced inspections are a normal part of maintaining a USDA license. The inspector does not schedule the visit in advance. The purpose is to see the facility and the animals under normal everyday conditions.
During the inspection, the inspector checked the environment where our cats and kittens live, including cleanliness, sanitation, housing conditions, ventilation, food and water, and the general condition of the animals.
They also checked how cat food is stored, as well as the storage of cleaning products, medications, and other supplies.
A large part of the inspection also involves records. The inspector reviewed our current list of cats and compared it with the animals present in the cattery. Microchip numbers and identification records were checked as well.
Veterinary records were reviewed for each cat, including medical history, vaccinations, treatments, and other required documentation.
This kind of oversight is important for animal welfare because USDA-licensed breeders are expected to maintain these standards every day. That is exactly why inspections are unannounced: the inspector sees the real day-to-day conditions in which the animals live, without giving the breeder time to prepare specifically for the inspection.
