No one was untouched by this tragedy, but for so many the absence of someone deeply loved is still felt every day, and KSF holds those people up especially today.

Moving has meant a lot of changes. Some of our providers were not able to come this far to care for the herd, including our past wonderful farrier, Eric John (we miss you!).
However, meeting new friends and excellent professionals has been a joy and we are so fortunate to have found Shawn Dunn who is now helping us keep the herd’s feet healthy.
Because a horse’s foot is always growing (like our fingernails) they need to trimmed and balanced for optimal musculoskeletal well-being. Most of the herd is barefoot, but because Archie’s and Sansa’s more sensitive feet benefit from the extra protection and support, they wear steel shoes which need to be changed out every 4-6 weeks.
Thank you Shawn for your kind approach with each horse and for doing a fantastic job with their pedicures!

Something funny for a foggy Friday;
KO came in to inspect my bathroom cleaning job.
A) I think he approved.
B) I rather think he liked admiring himself in the mirror, even with the fly mask on.

The Beautiful Draw of the Herd

It has been so lovely to see KSF’s herd of 6 become such a cohesive unit. Seeing them choose to all hang out at one run in (and 3 of them packed in happily on one side!) while another shed remains 100% vacant, is a wonderful demonstration of their natural proclivity toward social engagement. It has been a joy watching the different personalities come up against each other on occasion and then find resolution in some unspoken understanding.
Ahh, if we humans could be so adept at this community thing!

Without regular dental care, a horse’s ability to process forage, and keep their bite/jaw properly aligned can be seriously compromised, leading to nutritional and musculoskeletal problems. Their teeth, which unlike humans, continue to grow throughout their lives, require filing (called “floating”) to keep ridges, points, and misalignment from developing into issues.
Our absolutely wonderful equine dentist, Kay Dobson, of Dobson Dentistry came to Ashford to attend to the herd’s teeth this week! Kay’s beautiful approach of “waiting for the ‘yes’” (central to KSF’s program work) allows her to perform some pretty rigorous work inside their mouths without sedation or stress. You cannot miss her deep love and appreciation for each patient and the the horses don’t either - they feel it to their core. What a lovely example of gentle attunement!
Thank you, Kay!!

When the evening sun hits a pop-up downpour, you get a magnificent sight. It just kept intensifying and lasted a loong time - what a treat!

Eleanor, Barn Cat Extraordinaire that came with the new facility, is both a fantastic mouser, incredible singer, and the bravest derned cat I ever did meet! She couldn’t care less that one misstep by those 1000-pound creatures could be the end, and enjoys a sanguine stretch and roll.
We’re so glad she’s part of the KSF family! 🩷

What an unnerving day yesterday as we watched the cloud of smoke from the Canadian wildfires drive the Air Quality Index (AQI) from an already alarming “Unhealthy” classification to very high numbers in the “Hazardous” zone.
The United States Equestrian Foundation strongly advises cancelling scheduled competition when the AQI is 151 or above, so hitting the high 300’s was very concerning.
Aside from buying dozens of air purifiers for the barn, there’s not a lot you can do to protect horses but fortunately none of KSF’s horses have any pre-existing health conditions and fared just fine. We monitored them throughout the day for signs of distress, but they seemed oblivious to it all and happily represented our catch phrase: “Get Back to Grazing”.
We hope you are taking good care of yourselves and please keep all those impacted by the terrible fires in mind.

Good morning Community!
Yes, it’ll be hot, but I hope you can take a couple of deep breaths today, see the green, hear a bird, sense a breeze and enjoy a moment of full presence. You owe yourself that gift ☺️
