Looking for a smart, enthusiastic companion who will keep you on your toes and happily learn alongside you? Come meet Risha!

She is 5 years old and approaches the world with curiosity, vigor, and plenty of excitement! She spent a good deal of time with her foster family, who truly enjoyed her company.
Risha is an intelligent girl who loves learning. Our Behavior Team has spent lots of time helping her build her skills and keep her mind busy, and she really enjoys training; especially when exploring quiet public spaces with her people.

She knows “sit” and “down” and is working on skills like “leave it” and leash manners with a snoot loop. If you enjoy teaching your dog new things and giving them plenty of opportunities to use their brain, Risha could be a great match for you!

Risha would prefer to be the only pet in the home, as she isn't a fan of other dogs or cats. In return, she'll give all her love and attention to her people.

‼️URGENT: More dogs are coming through our doors than we have space for.

We have over 60 dogs available for adoption and only space for 24 in our adoption center. That means more than 40 dogs are in overflow housing.

Every adoption opens a kennel to another one. Every dog that finds a new home makes one more life we can save. 🩵

Josephine's golden years just got brighter: ashevillehumane.org/septembermatch

One look at Josephine tells a complicated story of both love and disrepair.

As a senior dog, she had been cared for in order to reach 10 years old and had probably been someone’s beloved pet. However, much happened between then and when she reached our doors as a stray.

Chronic skin infections left her dark fur so sparse you could see the red, wrinkled skin underneath. The thickened and discolored skin on her legs indicated a cycle of scratching and scarring. All of this, along with severe dental disease and eyes cloudy with corneal scarring, told us she would need extensive treatment. While somebody had loved her, it had been a long time since she received the care she desperately needed.

In cases as extreme as this there is only one course of action: fostering. And the choice of foster was obvious. Nancy is a long-time foster who specializes in care for small and senior dogs with complicated health situations.

Animals have much higher rates of healing when they are in a home. In our shelter, all Josephine had the energy to do was sleep. But with Nancy, she trundled curiously around the house, tail wagging happily, ears flapping with each toddling step.

“She loves to go on long, slow walks for multiple hours, even on those tiny, wrinkly feet!” they said.

Josephine received extensive care: special diets, medicated baths, topical therapies, antibiotics, antifungal medications, omega-3 supplementation, and regular veterinary monitoring. All of this, along with TLC from her dedicated foster, helped Josephine thrive — but none of it would happen without you.

🍻Cheers to another month of happy adoptions!

This August we saw one of our longest stay cats find someone who not only understood, but appreciated, her spiciness; a senior husky find a soft home full of blankets for his golden years; an adopter find a boisterous dog who matches her energy; and quite a few of our special needs kittens find people who are more than happy to provide the accommodations to give them healthy, happy lives; and many more!

Happy International Dog Day!📆🐶 We’ve got our official dog representative here, Goku! This 5-year-old is an expert at all things dog: playing tug-of-war, hiking, pool time followed by lots of sunbathing. Above all else, he is especially qualified at being your constant companion, endless love, and sweet, sweet smiles.

Goku would prefer to direct all his love to his people, so he would do best as your one-and-only canine companion. Due to his size (about 75 lbs), he’d do best in an adult household who can manage his care while respecting his boundaries.

Goku is one of our long stay dogs, meaning he has been with us for over a month. When you adopt one of our long stays, you rescue an animal who really needs it AND create space in the shelter for the next one.

We’ve been talking big game about our litters of littles, and it's starting to make our adult dogs feel… a little jealous. They asked us to remind you that anything puppies can do, they can do too!
