CONFIRMED SCREWWORM CASE REPORTED IN ZAVALA COUNTY

According to a video shared by Val Verde County Judge Lewis Owens, a confirmed case of New World Screwworm has been reported in neighboring Zavala County, increasing concerns among ranchers, livestock owners, veterinarians, and animal health officials across South Texas.

The New World Screwworm is a parasitic fly whose larvae feed on the living tissue of warm blooded animals. Infestations can cause severe wounds, infections, and significant health complications for livestock, wildlife, pets, and in rare cases humans.

The confirmed case serves as a reminder for animal owners throughout Maverick County and the surrounding region to closely inspect animals for unusual wounds, signs of infection, or the presence of maggots. Early detection and immediate reporting remain critical to preventing the spread of the parasite.

Local, state, and federal partners continue monitoring the situation as efforts are underway to protect livestock and animal populations across the border region. Judge Owens recently discussed the growing concerns surrounding screwworm activity and the importance of preparedness as the threat moves closer to Texas communities.

Anyone who suspects a possible screwworm infestation should contact their veterinarian or animal health officials immediately.

🚨 Community Notice-Urgent for Asherton Shelter🚨

This Thursday, the City of Asherton will be making a decision on who will become the new city manager. This decision could directly impact the future policies of our local animal shelter.

We want to bring awareness that many dogs currently in the shelter have been there for a long time and may be at risk if policy changes lead to euthanasia decisions.

🐾 We need a plan NOW.

Here’s how you can help:
• Consider fostering or adopting
• Share this post to spread awareness
• Reach out if you or someone you know can help rescue or rehome a dog
• Encourage others to speak up for humane solutions

Every dog deserves a chance. Let’s not wait until it’s too late to act.

📣 If you are willing to help or need more information, please comment or message.
