Horse figurines. Heartland. The Saddle Club. I remember wanting a horse so bad- I’d ask Santa for a horse EVERY. SINGLE. CHRISTMAS.

I’ve had my babies for a little over a week now. I’m still so grateful, and so thankful to be this blessed.

Some dreams really do come true. ♥️

I KNOW WE WANNA HELP MY GIRL OUT ♥️
Stella Bella is the most amazing little girl and she lost her best friend the other day.
Her Mom & Dad are some of the most amazing people I’ve ever met.
Seth & Dakota are one of the handful of people I’d walk through fire and brimstone for.

Let’s do what the chicken community does best and help out with 6k + worth of vet bills.

🎉 BIG THINGS ARE COMING TO THH POULTRY PALOOZA! 🎉

Y’all… we are dreaming BIG for this event.

Our goal isn’t just to create another poultry swap. We want to create an experience.

We’re currently working to bring educational opportunities directly to our vendors and customers by reaching out to some incredible resources, including:

🐓 Our preferred poultry veterinarian
🥚 The NPIP Director
🏆 The APA
🏆 The ABA
🌾 The Farm Service Agency

And we’re excited to announce that Tiffany from High Rock Chicks has agreed to teach a Genetics 101 seminar! 🧬

Whether you’re a seasoned breeder, a backyard poultry keeper, an exhibitor, or just someone who loves birds, we want Poultry Palooza to be a place where people can learn, network, ask questions, and grow together.

This event is still in the planning stages, but I wanted to give y’all a little sneak peek at what we’re working on behind the scenes. The support and excitement we’ve already received has been incredible.

2027 is going to be one heck of a year for poultry enthusiasts. ❤️🐓

🎉🐔 BIG NEWS FROM THH! 🐔🎉

You’ve asked.

You’ve hinted.

And we’re finally doing it…

✨ INTRODUCING THE BRAND NEW 2027
THH POULTRY PALOOZA! ✨

For the first time ever, your favorite bantam breeders and vendors will be able to bring their LARGE FOWL TOO!

That’s right!

🐣 Bantams AND Big Beauties
🐣 Tiny chickens AND giant chickens
🐣 The same breeders you know and love
🐣 More breeds, more colors, more variety, more fun!

We love our Bantam Only Flock Swaps and they aren’t going anywhere. Those events will continue to celebrate the tiny chickens that stole our hearts.

But THH Poultry Palooza is going to be something completely different…

Think:
🎪 SAME Vendors
🎪 More Poultry
🎪 More Shopping
🎪 More Networking
🎪 More Education
🎪 More Opportunities to find that special bird you’ve been searching for

Whether you love Seramas, Silkies, Cochins, OEGBs, Spitzhaubens, Brahmas, Orpingtons, Marans, Jersey Giants, or anything in between, this event is being designed to bring poultry lovers together from all corners of the hobby.

We’ve spent years building an incredible community of breeders, and now we’re excited to give them the opportunity to showcase BOTH their bantams and their large fowl at one event.

🐔 Small birds.
🐔 Big birds.
🐔 One amazing day.

Welcome to the THH POULTRY PALOOZA.

Coming in 2027. ❤️

If you’ve ever heard a conservation breeder grumbling every time the forecast changes, there is actually a good reason for it.

Many of the breeds on conservation watch lists, including breeds like the White-Faced Black Spanish, Spitzhauben, Nankins, Sebrights, Sicilian Buttercups, and Sumatras, can be surprisingly delicate compared to modern production birds.

Why?

🐣 They were never bred for commercial efficiency.
Modern production breeds have spent generations being selected for rapid growth, high egg production, and adaptability to intensive management. Many heritage and conservation breeds have not undergone the same level of selection for hardiness under modern conditions.

🌡️ Rapid temperature changes stress the body.
A bird’s immune system works hardest when it is trying to regulate body temperature. Going from 95° during the day to 65° overnight, followed by storms, humidity, and another heat wave, forces birds to constantly adjust. That stress can weaken immune response and make them more susceptible to illness.

💧 Humidity is often worse than heat.
Many breeders focus on the temperature number and forget about humidity. High humidity makes it difficult for birds to cool themselves effectively. Since chickens do not sweat, they rely on respiration and environmental conditions to regulate body temperature.

🦠 Stress lowers resistance.
Weather stress can contribute to flare-ups of respiratory issues, decreased fertility, lower hatch rates, reduced egg production, poor feather condition, and slower recovery from minor illnesses.

🥚 Breeding birds feel it first.
Conservation breeders are often working with smaller gene pools and carefully selected breeding stock. A bird that experiences prolonged weather stress may stop laying, have reduced fertility, produce weaker embryos, or simply fail to thrive the way it normally would.

🐓 Some breeds are naturally less forgiving.
Breeds like White-Faced Black Spanish are known for being slower maturing and more sensitive than many backyard production breeds. Spitzhaubens are active foragers and generally hardy, but abrupt environmental changes can still impact breeding performance, hatchability, and overall condition.

❤️ This is why conservation breeding matters.
When conservation breeders lose birds, they aren’t just losing livestock. Sometimes they’re losing bloodlines, genetics, and traits that have existed for hundreds of years. Every healthy hatch, every successful breeding season, and every bird raised to maturity helps preserve a piece of agricultural history.

So if you see conservation breeders obsessing over shade, ventilation, hydration, electrolytes, storm forecasts, or sudden cold fronts…

We’re not being dramatic.

We’re trying to protect breeds that the poultry world almost lost once already.

📢 NPIP & THH Bantam Only Flock Swaps 📢

We’ve seen some confusion recently regarding NPIP requirements, so let’s clear things up.

We have MANY vendors who attend our Bantam Only Flock Swaps that are NOT NPIP certified.

In fact, vendors have never been required to be NPIP in order to participate in our swaps if they are selling within North Carolina and operating within state regulations.

The only vendors who are required to be NPIP are those traveling from out of state, as required by state and federal poultry movement regulations. That requirement is dictated by law, not by The Happy Homestead.
Keep in Mind, that these events HAVE been approved by the Dept. of Agriculture and they have an open invitation to attend any of our events. We would never risk non compliance.

Our goal has always been to create an inclusive event where breeders of all experience levels can participate, learn, network, and share their birds with the community while remaining compliant with applicable laws and regulations.

If you are unsure whether NPIP applies to your specific situation, we encourage you to reach out to us and let us help you.

As always, our focus remains on healthy birds, responsible animal husbandry, and providing a positive experience for both vendors and attendees. ❤️🐓
