Wednesday Pet-Care Tip: Give Your Kitchen a Bird-Safety Check 🦜

Bird parents: “nonstick” can hide in more than frying pans!

When overheated, PTFE coatings can release colorless, odorless fumes that are extremely toxic to birds. Possible sources include cookware, air fryers, waffle irons, self-cleaning ovens, clothing irons and some heat lamps.

Before fall cooking gets busy:

* Check appliance manuals or contact the manufacturer to confirm products are PTFE-free.
* Don’t heat an appliance if its coating is unknown.
* Keep birds out of kitchens and laundry rooms.
* Replace questionable cookware with confirmed PTFE-free alternatives.

If exposure may have occurred, move your bird to fresh air and contact an emergency avian veterinarian immediately—don’t wait for symptoms.

Have you checked your air fryer, waffle maker and cookware lately? Share this reminder with a fellow bird parent! 💚

Wednesday Pet-Care Tip: Banana-Oat Dog Bites

That spotty banana can become a batch of tiny homemade treats!

For healthy adult dogs:

* 1 ripe banana
* 1 cup plain rolled oats
* 1 tablespoon unsalted, xylitol-free peanut butter

Heat oven to 300°F. Blend the oats into flour, mash the banana and combine everything. Form about 32 tiny, flattened bites and bake for 20–25 minutes until firm. Cool completely before serving.

Offer one small bite initially. Refrigerate in an airtight container for up to one week, or freeze for up to one month.

Important: Check the peanut-butter label for xylitol, birch sugar or wood sugar, which is dangerous to dogs. Treats should remain under roughly 10% of daily calories and never replace a balanced meal. Ask your veterinarian before offering these to dogs with pancreatitis, diabetes, allergies or prescription diets.

Would your pup sit politely—or supervise the oven impatiently? 💕🐾

Wednesday Pet-Care Tip: Make a Bunny Foraging Box! 🐰

Before recycling that cardboard box, let your rabbit inspect it!

Turn a plain cardboard box into an easy enrichment activity:

1. Remove all tape, staples, string and plastic labels.
2. Add plenty of your rabbit’s usual hay.
3. Hide a few pellets from their normal daily portion throughout the hay.
4. Let them sniff, dig, forage and shred!

This encourages natural foraging behavior without adding unnecessary treats.

Supervise the first few sessions and remove the box if your rabbit eats large amounts of cardboard rather than simply shredding it. The activity should complement—not replace—daily exercise, space and companionship.

Would your bunny delicately investigate—or immediately remodel the entire box? 🐇💕 Share their favorite enrichment activity below!

Wednesday Pet-Care Tip: Stop Hiding the Cat Carrier! 🐱

Does your cat disappear the moment the carrier comes out?

Instead of storing it away, leave the carrier open in a quiet area where your cat already enjoys spending time. Add familiar bedding, occasionally place treats or a favorite toy inside, and allow your cat to explore it without being forced.

Over time, the carrier can become a familiar resting place instead of a warning that something scary is about to happen. That can make veterinary visits, travel and emergencies safer and less stressful for everyone.

A few helpful tips:

* Choose a sturdy carrier with easy front and top access.
* Let your cat investigate at their own pace.
* Never chase or force them inside during training.
* When traveling, secure the carrier in the car.
* Give each cat their own carrier—even cats who normally get along.

Does your cat nap in their carrier—or run at the sight of it? Tell us below! 💕

Wednesday Pet-Care Tip: DIY Bird Foraging Cup 🐦

Your bird’s breakfast can double as brain enrichment!

Place a few pellets or a tiny portion of your bird’s usual treats inside an unwaxed, unlined paper cup. Loosely cover them with plain, undyed paper and let your bird search, shred and problem-solve!

Foraging encourages birds to use natural behaviors and can make mealtime more mentally stimulating.

Safety first:

Start easy, with some food still visible.
Use part of their normal daily food—not unlimited extra treats.
Avoid staples, tape, ink, dyes and plastic coatings.
Supervise every new activity and remove damaged materials.
Discontinue paper activities if they trigger obsessive shredding, nesting or territorial behavior.

Does your bird enjoy working for treats? Show us their favorite foraging activity! 💕

Pet Care Tip of the Week: Clip a carabiner to your leash handle on dog (or kitty) walks! You can clip the leash to your belt or bag for hands-free walking, wrap leash around a post or bench and clip to itself with the carabiner for a nice break, or attach your keys, p**p bag holder, or collapsible water bowl to your leash handle for handy access. So many uses for such a simple tool! It’s a pet parent’s must-have!
