Beat the Summer Sizzle: Are You Accidentally Overheating Your Dog? 🐾🔥
An exclusive sneak peek from my upcoming book, Fire-Inspired Paw-Print Australian Shepherd Nutritional Health.
When the summer heat hits us like a freight train, most folks just turn down the AC and call it a day. But if you’ve got a dog that’s chewing his paws raw, shaking his head viciously, or trailing you around with ears that look red and feel sweaty, the real problem might be simmering right inside his food bowl.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), summer is governed by the Fire Element. And if there is one thing I specialize in teaching raw feeders, it’s how to navigate this exact element diet. Why? Because canine nutrition isn't a one-size-fits-all equation. A dog's internal "thermostat" is completely dependent on two critical things: what kind of dog they are, and the environment they live in.
1. The Breed Factor: Built for the Job, Trapped by the Heat
Take the Australian Shepherd, for example. These are high-energy, high-drive working dogs built with a heavy, weather-resistant double coat. That coat is fantastic for shedding brush and staying insulated out on the ranch, but when that intense working-dog engine runs hot inside a double-insulated body, internal heat can get trapped fast. If you feed a high-energy, double-coated breed a diet full of "hot" proteins, you’re basically putting a heavy wool coat on 'em and making 'em sit by a campfire in July.
2. The Environmental Factor: Different Strokes for Different Climates
Your geography dictates your dog's bowl. Down here in East Texas, we don't just get heat—we get that thick, heavy, soup-like humidity. In TCM, high humidity outside creates sticky Dampness inside.
If your dog lives in a crisp, dry climate, their body handles heat completely differently. But when you combine high external humidity with "hot" foods (like chicken or lamb), it creates an internal swamp. That trapped damp-heat is the exact recipe that explodes outward as chronic yeast, gooey ears, and angry skin flare-ups.
🥩 The Summer Thermostat Lineup
If your dog is running hot this summer, here is how the foods in their bowl stack up on the TCM thermal scale to clear that heat:
The Neutral Anchor (Your Base): Beef. It is steady as a rock and won't add thermal heat to the body, giving you the perfect summer baseline.
The Organ Multivitamins: Beef Liver (neutral) and Beef Kidney (cooling). Kidney supports fluid balance and helps clear heat toxins right out of the blood, while Liver drops in the heavy Vitamin A and zinc needed to repair a chewed-up skin barrier.
The Structural Anchor: Raw Beef Bone. It's energetically neutral and keeps the digestive tract moving so things don't get stagnant and swampy. Plus, gnawing on a raw recreational bone gives a stressed, itchy dog a starch-free way to calm their nerves.
The Seafood Toppers: Sardines, green-lipped mussels, or clams. These are energetically neutral, packed with joint-supporting minerals, and loaded with anti-inflammatory Omega-3s to soothe hot skin without adding thermal heat.
The Cooling Additions: Duck or Rabbit actively pull fire out of the blood. Raw, pasture-raised eggs are incredible neutral-to-cooling Yin tonics that deeply moisturize dry tissues, while Cucumber and Celery act like an internal cooling mist for their organs.
🚨 Emergency Topper Troubleshooting
For Sweaty, Pink Ears: Catch it early with a small splash of Raw Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) in the food (1/4 to 1/2 tsp per 20 lbs) to keep the internal pH balanced.
For the Full-Blown "Doritos Foot" & Black Crud (The Yeast Swamp): If they smell like corn chips and are shaking their heads, yeast has moved into the swamp.
Strip the sugars: Get every single starch out of the bowl immediately.
Deploy the Living Foods: This is where you bring in the heavy hitters to fix the gut microbiome and crowd that yeast right out. Drop in a spoonful of homemade fermented sauerkraut (unstrained, with all those living enzymes) and a dollop of clean, homemade yogurt to flood the system with powerful, beneficial live cultures.
The ACV Topicals: Use a 50/50 mix of raw ACV and warm water to soak those itchy paws, and use a soaked cotton ball to gently wipe the black crud out of the outer ear folds.
🤔 Sizing Up the Competition: Raw vs. The Kibble Bag
Now, some folks might look at all this and think, "Can't I just scoop some dry kibble out of a bag and avoid all this fuss?"
Well, let's look at the facts. Out of a 40-pound bag of commercial kibble, you are usually only getting about 2 measly pounds of real meat. The rest is high-heat extruded starch and grain that breaks down into pure sugar, fueling the yeast swamp and turning gut damage into a permanent, chronic nightmare. This constant internal inflammation doesn't stop at yeast; it actively paves the way for chronic ear infections, leaky gut syndrome, hot spots, obesity, diabetes, early-onset arthritis, and even mast cell tumors.
With today's corporate vet clinics letting insurance companies dictate both their skyrocketing bills and their treatment plans, masking these diet-induced diseases with expensive, lifelong prescriptions will cost you an absolute fortune. A fresh, species-appropriate raw bowl lets you control the thermostat. By ditching the inflammatory starches, leaning on neutral bases, and layering in cooling elements, you can balance the exact dog sitting right in front of you and keep them out of the corporate clinic.
⏱️ The 5-Minute Thermostat Bowl: Making it Simple
Feeding fresh doesn't mean spending hours in the kitchen. To build a beautiful, cooling summer bowl for your dog, you can source your beef, organs, and raw bone straight from Midwest Legacy Beef. Drop that into the bowl, crack a fresh, pasture-raised egg over the top, and add two mussels and a sardine. To really drop the temperature and clear out that internal heat, toss on a refreshing piece of watermelon or cantaloupe for a massive burst of cooling hydration. Finish it off with a quick splash of raw apple cider vinegar, a dollop of homemade yogurt, and a spoonful of your homemade fermented sauerkraut.
Boom—that’s it. A vibrant, cooling, species-appropriate masterpiece that clears summer fire, feeds the microbiome, and takes you a total of 5 minutes to prep.
