Did you happen to see that there will be a FastCAT Fun Run at Newfiepalooza 2026?
No, this isn’t a mistake! Our beloved Newfoundlands have been taking up this fun new AKC sport! It’s one of the simplest sports to get started with. Show up and let your Newf RUN!
Check out this write up from Ms Twyla, who is a veteran FastCATTER! And, a video of a first time runner, Zeke, who tried out a Fun Run this past weekend to see how simple it would be. If Big Zeke can do it, anyone can do it!
**********
FastCAT is a timed 100 yard dash where a dog chases a bag lure down a straight track. A volunteer is at one end holding your dog and you are at the finish line beckoning your Newf to come to you! It's just a fun time for dogs to stretch their legs and play chase. For those that are not interested in the lure, like my Newf "Twyla", it's really a 100 yard recall. She has been running for almost 2 years and has such a fun time, though she is definitely not fast. There are three titles that can be earned and they are based on points, which corresponds with how many miles per hour the dog runs. Small and medium sized dogs get a handicap, but our big dogs do not. Twyla's average speed is 10 mph so she averages 10 points per run. Twyla is definitely not built for speed, but many other Newfs are and average in the 20+ mph range. At 150 points, a dog earns a BCAT, at 500 points is a DCAT and 1000 points is an FCAT. Twyla has earned her BCAT! Some clubs give an award for the slowest run of the day, called a Turtle award. Twyla has won 3 Turtle awards. Rumor has it that NCNC will be giving out a coveted Turtle award at Newfiepalooza!
