Did you know that the Alaska Zoo is a trained oil spill response organization for polar bears living on Alaska’s North Slope?

Multi-agency drills are held to ensure that responding staff are trained on procedures, equipment, mobilization and inventory in the event of a real oil spill emergency on the North Slope.

Our commitment to polar bears extends far beyond our zoo to the wild populations who call our great state of Alaska home. It’s time for a Meatball the opossum update! This is from Zookeeper Inge:

Meatball has really blossomed into quite the character since his arrival!
He’s brave, smart, and very goofy! His favorite food is chicken, but red grapes are a close second! (He’s a foodie though and will eat just about everything).

He came in with a few different ailments and health concerns, all of which have been treated and healed up - thanks to our amazing vet!

He has a favorite blue blanket that he snuggles up with every night, and his favorite enrichment is anything he can climb on. He’s also very good at puzzle feeders! He loves using his prehensile tail and opposable thumbs to climb everywhere and anywhere.

He has been spotted out and about on his own right when the zoo opens but is normally tucked into bed by 11am at the latest (this species is nocturnal).

Guests will occasionally catch me training with him right before the zoo closes! If you see us in a training session or you see Mestbsll out in the daytime, stay calm and quiet as he’s still adapting to his busy surroundings. We want to keep his guest interactions positive so visitors can continue to spot him! 😊

Zoo hours are 9am-7pm through the remainder of August, except for an early closure at 3pm on August 29th for Clue at the Zoo. September hours are 10am-5pm. Plan a zoo visit soon and be sure to check out our upcoming events at alaskazoo.org.
