Studies show that a horse's heart can generate a magnetic field up to five times stronger than ours, and it actually synchronizes with a human's heart rate when we are calm and grounded nearby. But there’s much more to it than that. In 1999, Linda Kohanov began studying and mapping aspects of the horse’s electromagnetic field due to her work with a dangerous stallion who could not be touched. Over the years, she noticed that the energy field had a multi-layered effect and that humans could either dysregulate or coregulate a horse’s nervous system through predictable interactions at distances of 20 feet or more. Over time, she developed protocols that helped people gain the trust of fearful or aggressive horses through conscious interactions with the equine energy field.

During her workshops in Europe, Australia, Canada and North America, she used these same protocols with hundreds of horses and taught their owners to do the same. She also learned that the same protocols could be used with fearful or aggressive people, and with other animals.

“In the beginning, I taught these protocols only to advanced equestrian students,” she says. “But this form of sentient communication was so useful, even in purely human contexts, that I began to teach these skills during my introductory workshops and in my sessions with people who either work with trauma survivors or are trauma survivors themselves.”

Linda was particularly surprised to find that the engineers she worked with at Raytheon Missile Systems not only embraced the protocols, they were unusually comfortable with the idea of learning to communicate through interactions with the energy fields of living beings: “After all, they told me, not only do they have to calculate for the influence of the earth’s electromagnetic field to send a ship to the moon, these rocket scientists have learned how use energy fields as nonviolent weapons to surround a sensitive military installation with an invisible force that literally makes trespassers feel nauseated and unable to function under its influence.”

Linda says she has written about the equine energy field in limited ways in her books, but because of the nonverbal nature of the protocols, she and the Eponaquest instructors she has trained must teach most of this knowledge in person, with the horses.

What makes studying directly with Linda Kohanov different? It’s not just about learning an approach. It’s about learning from someone who has spent three decades exploring the healing and transformational potential of the horse-human bond.

Linda is recognized as one of the founders of the field of Equine-Facilitated Learning, which helps people excel in life by practicing innovative leadership, nonverbal communication, mindfulness, and emotional and social intelligence skills through non-riding activities with horses. Her bestselling book, The Tao of Equus (published in 2001 and revised in 2024), is considered a classic, the first to explore the physical, psychological, and spiritual benefits of working with horses as teachers capable of helping humans become more balanced, compassionate and empowered in life. Four more books followed, including Way of the Horse: Equine Archetypes for Self-Discovery and The Power of the Herd: A Nonpredatory Approach to Social Intelligence, Leadership and Innovation.

As a member of the visiting faculty for the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine, she has taught fourth year medical students and residents in the elective rotation for integrative medicine. In addition, she was part of a research team led by Dr. Ann Baldwin with the University of Arizona studying the physiological effects of horse-facilitated activities. In partnership with psychologist Dr. Rebecca Bailey, Linda also created Connection Focused Therapy®, a polyvagal informed equine-facilitated therapy model in 2013.

Linda is known for bringing horse-inspired wisdom into purely human contexts. She has appeared at the Organization Development Conference, the Omega Institute, Naropa University, the International Transpersonal Conference, Hollyhock British Columbia, and the Executive MBA Program at l’Institut Mines-Telecom in Paris. She has trained executives at Nike, Chubb Insurance, Best Friends Animal Society, Raytheon, the Primavera Foundation, and Highland Rivers Behavioral Health, among other companies. Through the University of Alberta and a research grant from the Canadian government, she just completed a two-year leadership/social intelligence training program for nearly 100 long term care home managers.

Her interdisciplinary seminars attract business leaders, entrepreneurs, educators, scientists, mental health professionals, artists, clergy, and social activists worldwide. The demand for her work became so great that, in 2002, she began training instructors to establish their own practices employing the Eponaquest Approach. Over 300 professionals from six continents have graduated from this program. After leading such trainings throughout North America, Europe, and Australia, she will add India to the list in December 2026 when she travels to New Delhi to teach instructors at the Sri Aurobindo Gnostic Education Center.

Evocative poem.

The Horse Who Walks Between Worlds

Where the evening wind crosses the open plains,
and the last light turns the earth to bronze,
a dark horse stands beneath the silent sky,
listening for voices beyond the horizon.

His mane moves like smoke through the twilight,
carrying circles of shadow and flame;
each curve holds a forgotten journey,
each breath remembers an ancient name.

The flowers at his feet remain open
long after the sun has disappeared,
as if they know the path of spirits
and bloom whenever the unseen draws near.

Far beyond the hills, a drumbeat rises—
slow, deep, and older than rain.
