Thought I would share I have always thought we over vaccinate our dogs especially giving them vaccines all at one time ❤️ Your vet might call it “routine.”
But a growing number of veterinarians and scientists are sounding the alarm about over-vaccination-especially in breeds like Goldens.

Fact: Golden Retrievers are one of the most over-vaccinated and cancer-prone breeds.

Fact: Core vaccines like distemper and parvo often provide immunity for 7-9 years-or even a lifetime.

Fact: Yet many dogs still get the same shots every year... without a second thought.

Here’s what they won’t tell you in the exam room:
Repeated vaccines don’t always mean stronger protection.
In some cases, they can mean overstimulated immune systems, chronic inflammation, tumor growth, and increased disease risk.

Experts have even linked early spay/neuter and excessive vaccines to heightened cancer risk in breeds with already vulnerable genetics.

If your gut has ever said “this feels off” in the vet’s office...
You’re not wrong.
And you’re not alone.

💬Ask questions. Request titers. Advocate like their life depends on it-because it does.

Save this. Share it with someone who needs to see it.

Preventing unwanted litters is a goal we all share—but it's time to rethink the surgical approach. Hysterectomies and vasectomies, which preserve hormonal balance, can safely be performed as early as 8 weeks of age, making dogs sterile without disrupting their natural hormones.

In this study, researchers looked at whether the age at which dogs were spayed or neutered, meaning how long they were exposed to their natural s*x hormones, affected how healthy they were in old age. They studied a group of long-lived pet dogs to learn what helps dogs live longer, healthier lives. Dogs with the fewest age-related health problems were considered the most “robust.”

The results showed that both male and female dogs who kept their hormones longer (i.e., were spayed or neutered later) were 3 to 10 times more likely to be healthy in old age compared to those altered earlier. Once hormone exposure and age were taken into account, there was no difference in old-age health between males and females.

This study highlights how important s*x hormones may be for staying healthy later in life and shows that early-life decisions—like when to spay or neuter—can have long-term effects on health.

🐾🌼Spring is here, so be expecting emails and reminder phone calls from your vet, encouraging you to schedule your spring wellness visit (please do this)—but watch my latest interview with UW-Madison vet school professor Dr. Laurie Larson, first! (Visit my website, drkarenbecker.com to read the article or watch this important discussion!).
Dr. Larson is an expert in antibody titer testing, and thankfully, the conversation about vaccinations 💉has evolved, especially regarding how frequently our pets truly need them. In my interview, Dr. Larson provides an in-depth look at how titers can guide more personalized and scientifically sound vaccination decisions, protecting our pets without the risk of over-vaccinating.
Veterinarians have accounts with nation-wide veterinary laboratories (Antech and/or Idexx) that provide parvo and distemper titer testing services, so all vets can perform them, however, the most inexpensive lab I have found for parvo/distemper titers is the Companion Animal Vaccine and Immuno Diagnostic Service Laboratory (CAVIDS) at the UW-Madison vet school. Here’s the link you or you vet can use to submit a sample:
