🐟 One of the things we started doing this year was adding Salmon, Mackerel and Sardines to their food about 3xs a week... This morning while making a big batch of it, LuLu says "yum yum, don't mind me".
🐟Results of googling benefits of adding fishies to your dog (or cats) diet:
🎣 Shiny Coat & Skin: High levels of EPA and DHA (Omega-3s) help reduce itchy skin, minimize shedding, and promote a soft, lustrous coat.
🎣 Joint & Bone Support: The natural anti-inflammatory properties of Omega-3s ease arthritis symptoms, while naturally occurring calcium and phosphorus in the soft, edible bones boost bone strength.
🎣 Heart & Brain Health: They are rich in Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) and taurine, which support cardiovascular function, and DHA, which promotes brain health and cognitive function in older dogs or puppies.
🎣 Immune Boost: Packed with Vitamin D and selenium, these fish actively regulate the immune system.
⚠️ Safe Feeding Guidelines
👀 Never Feed Raw Salmon: Raw wild salmon can harbor a dangerous parasite and bacterium responsible for "salmon poisoning disease," which can be fatal to dogs. Cook it thoroughly, or use commercially frozen/canned options.
👀 Check the Can Labels: Choose fish packed in water with no added salt, oils, or spices. Look for eco-conscious certifications like the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) blue label.
👀 Watch the Calories: Oily fish are calorie-dense. One standard 3.75-ounce can of sardines contains roughly 200 calories—about the same as half a cup of standard kibble. Reduce their regular food portion on the days they enjoy fish to prevent weight gain.
