Rest in peace, Captain Barbosa.

No dog should meet the end of their life at just 3 years young. It isn’t fair. But if I let you go on, you would have been fighting pain with no relief.

Without question, you are the most dignified and proud dog I’ve ever met. You hold yourself in high regard— as you should—and move through the world with an air of confidence and curiosity that few dogs possess. Especially ones in as much pain as you were.

You could’ve hunkered down, or bitten, or acted miserable. You would have been justified in those circumstances. Instead, you walked into each day with an optimism I will always admire. The kindest thing I could have done for you was relieve you of your suffering, and though some would call me crazy, I know you understand why I let you go.

Dozens of dogs have come through my doors, but I’ve never had one garner such a fanbase. You were so loved buddy.

Somewhere beyond our full understanding you are sailing through storms and ruling a crew, keeping charge as you made clear you were meant to, where pain has no hold on you. And when my time eventually comes, I know you will be amongst the dogs I meet again, in a body that will not fail you.
