On occasion, even our dogs have to go back to basics.
Sharing space with The Vista means our dogs are now working around some stuff they’ve never experienced before- horses being actively schooled right outside their new home.
They know “place” and they’ve been around horses, but putting those two things together in a brand-new environment is a new and very important skill.
Dogs don’t automatically generalize what they know. When the environment gets more complex/distracting, good training means adjusting the criteria and rebuilding behavior instead of getting frustrated that they “should” know this.

And on that note… we are officially MOVED, mostly settled, and back to work! We’re still figuring out our new normal over here, but we’re excited about what that looks like.

Can you tell who has gone through this before? 😂
Some of the crew think something is WRONG as the boxes multiply and their things disappear.
Mais, who has moved with us four times now: “Oh, this again.”
This is a pretty good example of something so important in dog training- learning how to be uncomfortable without falling apart.

Our other four dogs have never experienced a move. The house looks different, routines are weird, furniture is disappearing, the humans are running around carrying boxes (and stressing), and all of their favorite things have mysteriously vanished into the ether.
They’re nervous and unsure, and that’s okay.
Our job isn’t to immediately remove discomfort or reinforce uncertainty. Our biggest job as leaders is to give them the skills and support to sit with it, regulate themselves, and learn: “This feels weird, but I can handle weird.”
Confidence doesn’t come from never feeling uncomfortable. It comes from experiencing discomfort and learning you’ll come out the other side just fine. Human therapists would agree. 😂

Also- THE BIG MOVE IS ALMOST DONE. If we’ve been slower than usual answering messages or emails, thank you for bearing with us while we relocate an entire household, business, and all of the animals. We’ll be back at it ASAP!
And don’t worry, the crew here for training are all doing great!

Meet Hamburglar, quite possibly the world’s least Malinois-y Malinois.
Hamburglar is about a year old, spayed, up to date on vaccines, and currently hanging out in Texas with Fizz’s breeder while she waits for the right home.
She is a “unicorn” of a mal in that she is genuinely just an easy, sweet, social girl. She loves people, does well with other dogs, is eager to please, loves food, LOVES water, and mostly seems interested in being somebody’s best friend.

She is not a protection or high drive working prospect, which is exactly what makes her such a gem. She’d be a fantastic companion for someone who wants an active dog for walks, hiking, adventures, performance sports, training, and then coming home to cuddle on the couch. she’s incredibly willing, trainable, and very easy to live with and manage.

Hamburglar is currently in Texas, BUT we can help transport her to South Carolina around the middle of October for the right home. Mutts & Manners will also donate some training to whoever adopts her to help get everyone started on the right foot.
Basically, if you’ve ever wanted a Belgian Malinois but thought, “I would prefer one without the domestic terrorist package,” Hamburglar may be your girl.

Yesterday's assignment: help a bunch of corgis!
Team Mutts&Manners and KismetK9 had such a great time partnering with the Aiken Corgi Club for a little hands-on training session! We discussed communication, engagement, structure, place work, leash skills, and most importantly, how to build a meaningful relationship between human and dog.
The dogs showed up ready to work, the humans asked great questions, and Lily graciously supervised the entire operation from her throne.
Huge thank you to the Aiken Corgi Club for having us out and to everyone who brought their pups!
