GVS Wisdom Wednesday!

The image below depicts the importance of sedated dental exams, and regular dental care.

- This horse was a body condition score "BCS" of 3/9 when coming into his new owners care with an unknown age. We estimated him to be over 20 for sure.

- Many teeth are missing likely due to age. Because of that this horse has little to no chewing surface, and struggled to get the proper nutrients from hay alone.

- Upon this discovery, this horse was switched to soaked alfalfa pellets, senior feed and supplements. This patient has bloomed into 6/9 BCS and is thriving at being a lesson horse.

Things to remember about the equine patient is that their teeth continuously grow until they are well into their 20's.

Because horses chew in a circular motion to grind their forage (hay/grass) they create sharp points on the outside of their maxillary (Top) teeth and the inside of their mandibular (Bottom) teeth that can cause discomfort.

It is especially important for performance horses to have their teeth done every 6-12 months as it can greatly impact their willingness to compete.

Reach out to GVS to schedule your horse's dental today!

Spring is right around the corner which means it is time to start preparing all our animals for the up coming show season with yearly vaccines and preventative measures!

Traveling & boarded Equines vaccine recommendation;
Rabies, Tetanus, West Nile, and Eastern and Western encephalomyelitis (yearly). Rhinopneumonitis due to types 1 and 4 viruses, and equine influenza due to type A2 viruses (given every 6 months).
Pasture Equines vaccine recommendations
Rabies, Tetanus, West Nile, and Eastern and Western encephalomyelitis.
Another common vaccine that is given to boarded horses is Strangles!

We use Zoetis Core Innovator & Zoetis FLUVAC INNOVATOR EHV-4/1. Very simple two vaccine process with great protection.

Another common product we suggest talking about in the spring time for our Equine athletes is Adequan!

Adequanยฎ i.m. is recommended for the intramuscular treatment of non-infectious degenerative and/or traumatic joint dysfunction and associated lameness of the carpal and hock joints in horses.
We love their moto; reduce inflammation, restore joint lubrication, repair joint cartilage & reverse the disease process.
