The refuge got another ramp modification upgrade today to assist Mila who is very wobbly due to her neurological issues. We added textured outdoor carpet to allow better traction. We are trying to keep the dogs as independent as they can be. 😁

W**d- March 2017 - June 7, 2026
RIP 🌈

Today we lost our little warrior who fought the good fight and was such a brave bun. He endured three surgeries since December and we took every measure we could. Sometimes conditions can’t be fixed. 😞

W**d had abscesses throughout his muscle tissue and our very experienced exotic vet said he had never seen anything like it in his 30 years of practice. Meds, shots, hand feedings, around the clock care… we did all we could. Special thanks to Pete for the months of administering shots and care you gave to help our little buddy.

W**d was tiny but mighty and made many people question things and think outside the box. His care was expensive but no regrets. We will never deny an animal care if there is a vet willing to help and if the animal has the will to go on. W**d had the true will to live and we will always remember his s***k and bravery.

Go hop along our friend until we meet again. ❤️🐇 🥕

Mila is checking in to say hi. She’s hanging in there with her myriad of neurological issues and has been able to gain weight and maintain it! She’s a special girl with her Chihuahua resiliency.

The DNA results are in! 🥳

Meatball is 100% bulldog in some shape or form!

69.2% American Bully
This is the Americanized version of a “bulldog” which isn’t a formally recognized AKC breed but has become a popular push in backyard breeding which has resulted in some very poor characteristics. You may see ads for pocket bully’s and they would fall in this category.

21.8% Bulldog aka English Bulldog which is your short traditional Bulldog with the round head

9% French Bulldog which explains his wild sound effects! 🤪

It is so fun to find out the breeds of our rescues because it can help unravel some of the behavioral issues and validate what we thought.

No matter, he’s 100% Meatball! ☺️

Turtle time at the sanctuary!
We are the keepers of several tortoises and turtles who have special needs and they are all well over 10 years old now.

We aren’t just a dog rescue/refuge but take in and care for many exotics and small mammals as well.

Griffey!

And the results are in! We pulled Griffey from BARCS Animal Shelter last fall as she was a third time stray brought into the shelter. BARCS had in their records that her owner stated she was a Minpin/Sh*tzu and sure enough! She must have been the result of an intentional “backyard” breeding as that is what her Embark dna testing revealed. Sad she was a stray multiple times and was never redeemed but we are grateful to have her. She had signs of abuse so now she’s living her best life. Must have been destiny as we have been keepers of MinPins since the early 90s and they are our heart breed. Griffey’s tenacity and energy are true to the Minpin profile so it’s a match made in heaven. 😊❤️🐕

W**d - little warrior rabbit man 🐇

Warning: these pictures will be considered gorey to most!

Not all stories have happy endings here at the mission. W**d, an older lion head rabbit, has been battling a relentless series of facial abscesses. He underwent his first big surgery on December 1st and has since had 2 additional surgeries. After months of many antibiotics and biweekly injections, many vet visits, and two additional major surgeries, we have decided to stop further treatment. Our vet is one of the most sought after exotic vets in the region and he has never seen anything as invasive as this in his 30 years in practice. W**d has micro abscesses throughout his muscle tissue that has spanned from above/behind the eye around his face and into the jaw and neck. We are only 2 weeks post op from surgery #3 and the abscesses are already forming again despite aggressive drug treatment. After almost 5 months of surgeries and drug treatments, W**d has had enough. This infection is relentless and all treatments have just been temporary.😞

We always trust our animals to lead the way and tell us how to navigate their care and we have no doubt W**d wants to live his last days eating carrots and not having more surgeries and meds and injections.

We will keep W**d comfortable and will not let him suffer. He still hops around and stomps his feet and we hope his quality of life will be good for whatever time he has left.

We gave it our best shot and sometimes even the best vets and best intentions are not enough.

Send some good vibes to our little warrior rabbit W**d! ❤️

These beauties joined the rescue today from BARCS Animal Shelter. Gerbils are curious and entertaining creatures! Grateful to be able to bring these two into the sanctuary.
