Poznámka z praxe 🐴

Masážna pištoľ je skvelý pomocník pri regenerácii, no pamätajte: vždy jej musí predchádzať palpácia. Pred spustením pištole musíte mať koňa dobre ohmataného rukami, poznať jeho anatómiu a vedieť, kde presne je problém a ktorým miestam sa vyhnúť.

Technológia je super, no ruky a správnu techniku nič nenahradí.

Ako často využívate regeneračné pomôcky vy?

Is this a defect in the radius joint cartilage in a 10 month old c**t called Z.

This was found during a whole horse dissection completed by Lindsey Field and Dr. Ivana Ruddock- Lange last week.

This is the articular surface of the left radius at the elbow (humeroradioulnar joint) from a 10-month-old c**t diagnosed with osteochondritis dissecans (OCD).

Could this lesion be related to the OCD? It is an unusual finding in such a young horse. I often see these “lesions” in this area in older horses but they are not a big. There was a clear red region- marked in the photo.

OCD is a developmental orthopaedic disease in which cartilage fails to develop and mature normally into bone through the normal process of endochondral ossification. The exact cause remains unknown, although genetics, nutrition, growth rate, biomechanics and trauma have all been proposed as contributing factors.

C**t Z was euthanised due to OCD and clear lameness. He stopped playing with his sister in the paddock and was quite sore when he was with me a few days prior to euthanasia. He constantly cocked his right hind and stomped like he was swishing flies but there are no flys at this time of year in NZ.

It’s never easy doing dissections and especially in such a young horse. Broke our hearts.

The margo plicatus of a 10 month old c**ts stomach (called Zion)

This is the junction between the squamous (non-glandular) and glandular portions of the equine stomach.

Along this junction I found multiple small, raised nodular lesions with some shallow surface defects. They caught my attention because they are not something I commonly see.

At this stage I am not calling these gastric ulcers. Without histology, it would be inappropriate to make that diagnosis.

My role is to carefully document what I find, photograph it and compare it with the horse’s history. Histology may help determine exactly what these changes represent, or they may simply remain an interesting gross finding.

Zion recently started chewing on fence posts and any wood he found. I wonder if this was related to these lesions or whether it was pain related due to his vet diagnosed OCD.
