Rex after his sedation today for the CT scans.

We trained very hard for his consensual blood-draw, but no training in the world prepared us for this amount of distress an animal goes through with the confusion and loss of control of their own body during sedation 💔 (another reason I adamantly refuse to have our fearful dogs on Acepromazine at the vet; but that's another story for another day 😪)

Follow along to see the journey of Rex and how I trained him as a Professional Dog Trainer to regain trust in strangers, male vets and being in the consultation room again, and to consent to blood-draws without physical restraint!

Yes you heard me right.

You do NOT need to hold your dog down at the vet, even to do something so aversive as a BLOOD DRAW. Even if your dog is aggressive towards strangers or have had a bad experience before at the vet.

Just ask Rex!

Because of him having diarrhoea, I decided to postpone his GA and procedure last week, hence today we are coming back to the vet again for the BIG DAY.

Today's Rex's day of Examinations (I reckon this level of difficulty is akin to PhD lor) after the past 10 sessions of training for this procedure.

Scroll through the videos to watch the entire procedure of Rex at the vet doing the multiple blood-draws, sedation and how he handled the unexpected stressors that came his way during the process.

It's possible to do blood-draws WITHOUT physical restraint on our nervous and bitey dogs with past negative associations with vets, strangers and being in the clinic.

Rex is here to tell you so!!

Scroll to our past FB posts to see the journey of Rex and how I trained him to learn to trust strangers, male vets and being in the consultation room again, and to consent to blood-draws without physical restraint.

Do you have a dog who is nervous at the vet and is aggressive towards strangers or vet staff who attempt to touch or handle him?

Meet Rex.

Yesterday marked a new milestone for Rex.
He overcame his fear of male vets and offered his paw happily for a blood draw simulation - all without restraint.

No struggle. No fear. Just trust.

So we decided that he is ready for the real thing.

Today, Rex will be going for his real blood draw, GA procedure and CT scans.

Please send positive vibes and prayers our way.

Rex, please be safe.
And be well. ❤️

Do you have a dog who is nervous at the vet and is aggressive towards strangers or vet staff who attempt to touch or handle him?

Meet Rex.

Watch how I changed how he feels about male vets and strangers touching him, to offer his paws voluntarily (and happily) and consent to blood draws - all without physical restraint.

You can do too, with time and a lot of patience and hard work. And skilled training.

Making memories.

Discovered that there are actually new seating areas created since the last we were here.

We are blessed with such beautiful sights in Singapore.

Forced myself to drive us out tonight because we are hardly out at new places. Because I know he is coming of age and we only have this much time with our doggies.

When was the last time you were out creating memories with your dog?

Do you have a dog who runs away whenever it's time for paw wiping or grooming?

Do you find yourself holding on to, carrying or putting your dog on the table in order to wipe your dog down, or to do some grooming procedures?

What if I tell you that you shouldn't do the above even if it makes our job easier or faster? What if I tell you that you should let your dog have the CHOICE to run away from grooming procedures and start from there, even if it takes longer and is more tedious for us to finish the job of wiping or grooming our dog?

Meet Poppy.

Poppy used to run away every time the wet wipes appeared and her humans started to sit down on the floor to attempt to wipe her paws after walks. Hence Poppy's humans started putting her on the table instead after walks to wipe her down, because this way, she would stop moving away or retracting her paws from being wiped. When wiped this way, Poppy did not struggle, nor did she vocalise nor attempt to bite, so her humans thought that she was fine with it.

When I discovered this by accident, I pointed out Poppy's body language during the procedure - her mouth was closed and tight, eyes were hard, brows furrowed, body was tense and she looked really stressed. Poppy was not moving away from the wiping because she was afraid of the heights, not because she was fine with the wiping. Putting her on a high table was forcing her to tolerate the wiping and only adds on to convince her on a daily basis that body handling was scary and unpleasant.

Forcing our dogs to tolerate procedures may make our job easier, but tolerance comes with a limit and if it happens on a bad day when the dog was already stressed over something else that happened today or even 2-3 days ago (yes it takes THAT LONG for stress hormone cortisol to dissipate in the body), it can push our dog TO BITE. This is called TRIGGER STACKING - the same reason for road rage, where we humans start to bash up another driver just because he cut into our lane; because we were having a bad day.

It may seem impossible, but I'm here to tell you that it is possible to train our dogs to enjoy being handled. And to CONSENT and OFFER to be handled.

Just ask Poppy. 🥰
