Today i decided to write a useful info about how to take care of little poms in the first days at new home. And main attention is for sure to the tiniest dogs that are under 700 grams.
⠀
As many of you know: tiny poms can have hypoglecemia. It is low sugar in blood. Especially this concerns the tiniest representatives of breed. But on other hand these small puppies are cute and lovely, so in this post i want to tell how to avoid that problem and why this happens.
⠀
Why sugar in blood becomes low? Usually it is result of stress + time when puppy is hungry. Sadly to say, but many owners forget to feed their dogs in time. Dont be lazy to suggest food to your puppy at least 1 time per 4 hours, dont suggest just kibbles, but suggest pate for dogs - it contains more calories then kibbles and usually puppies eat it with pleasure.
⠀
Also try to get in advance (and keep it at home !!!) Liquid honey and some caloric paste - it helps in cases of hypo.
⠀
How to recognise hypo? Puppy becomes weak, lays on floor with eyes open or walking like drunken. If u see this - first of all try to feed puppy with pate or give a little bit honey + water.
⠀
Also hypoglecemia sometimes appears after long flights - as puppies refuse to eat during the travel. Another reason for hypo - if u change food very fast. So thats why i highly recomend to feed puppy with exactly same brand of food what it was given in native kennel. Also if u add new ingredients in puppy food like: chicken, vegetables and so on - try at first do it by very small pieces and look on reaction, as many small puppies have an allergy on boiled chicken (in this cases try to give turkey, not chicken). And for sure dont feed small puppies with some things that u see in internet: strawberries, chokolate, coffee, sausages...
⠀
First few days at new home always look after puppy and never sacrifice health for a size. Always remember that loosing an appetite - this is red flag.
