🐶 PUPPY GROWTH PLATES - WHY THEY MATTER MORE THAN YOU MIGHT THINK

Puppies are not simply smaller versions of adult dogs.

Underneath all that puppy energy is a developing skeleton that is still growing, changing and maturing.

And one particularly important part of that development is the growth plates.

🦴 WHAT ARE GROWTH PLATES?

⭐️ Growth plates - technically called physes - are areas of developing cartilage located near the ends of many of a puppy’s long bones.

This is where much of the lengthening of the bones occurs as your puppy grows.

⭐️ As skeletal maturity approaches, these growth plates gradually close and are replaced by mature bone.

Until then, they are structurally different from the surrounding mature bone.

⭐️ That matters because injuries involving a growth plate can potentially interfere with normal bone development.

⚠️ WHEN DO GROWTH PLATES CLOSE?

There isn’t one universal age.

⭐️ Different bones mature at different times, and breed, genetics, sex and expected adult size all influence skeletal development.

As a broad guide:

🐾 Small breeds often reach skeletal maturity earlier - approximately 6-12 months.

🐾 Medium breeds may continue developing until approximately 12 months.

🐾 Large breeds commonly continue skeletal development until around 12-18 months.

🐾 Giant breeds can continue maturing until approximately 18-24 months, sometimes longer in aspects of musculoskeletal development.

So the statement:

“He’s a year old, so his growth plates are closed.”

…isn’t necessarily true.

Even within the same dog, different growth plates close at different ages.

🦴 WHY DOES THIS MATTER?

A growing puppy absolutely NEEDS exercise.

Movement helps develop:

✔️ muscles
✔️ tendons and ligaments
✔️ coordination
✔️ balance
✔️ proprioception
✔️ cardiovascular fitness
✔️ confidence
✔️ healthy body composition

So protecting growth plates does not mean wrapping puppies in cotton wool.

The important distinction is between appropriate self-directed movement and excessive, repetitive or highly forced exercise.

🌿 LET PUPPIES MOVE LIKE PUPPIES

Free exploration on appropriate surfaces is very different from making a puppy repeatedly perform an activity because we want them to keep going.

Think:

✅Sniffing.

✅Walking.

✅Trotting.

✅Playing.

✅Exploring different safe surfaces.

✅Changing direction.

✅Stopping.

✅Resting.

✅Moving again.

A puppy regulating its own movement has opportunities to change pace and stop.

Compare that with repetitive activities such as prolonged forced running, repeatedly chasing a ball, running alongside a bike, repetitive high-impact jumping or extensive repetitive stair work.

The puppy may enthusiastically participate - but enthusiasm doesn’t mean their developing body is ready for unlimited repetitions.

🎾 BALL CHASING DESERVES PARTICULAR ATTENTION

Repeated ball throwing can involve:

➡️ rapid acceleration
➡️ sudden braking
➡️ sharp turns
➡️ twisting
➡️ jumping
➡️ repetitive loading of the same structures

And because chasing can be extremely exciting, some puppies will continue long after sensible physical limits would otherwise tell them to slow down.

One throw isn’t the issue.

Repetition and intensity are.

🐕 WHAT ABOUT WALKS?

You may have heard the old:

“Five minutes of walking per month of age.”

There isn’t good scientific evidence establishing this as a universal rule. But - it may be a sensible guide to work around.

A 20-minute slow, sniffy exploration is not physically equivalent to 20 minutes of running, jumping or repetitive fetch.

Instead of obsessing over a stopwatch, consider:

Intensity + duration + frequency + terrain + repetition + individual puppy.

A growing Great Dane and a growing Chihuahua are not developing on identical timelines.

🧠 AND DON’T FORGET THE BRAIN

🤨 Puppies don’t need to be physically exhausted to have their needs met.

➡️ Sniffing, exploring, chewing, licking, problem solving, training, enrichment and appropriate social experiences can provide enormous amounts of stimulation without requiring repetitive high-impact exercise.

⚠️ And puppies need a LOT of sleep.

Often the answer to a puppy becoming increasingly wild, bitey and unable to settle isn’t:

“He needs more exercise.”

Sometimes it’s:

“He needs to sleep.”

🚩 WATCH THE PUPPY IN FRONT OF YOU

After activity, pay attention to things such as:

stiffness
limping
reluctance to move
altered gait
difficulty getting comfortable
reluctance to use stairs or jump
suddenly sitting or lying down
lagging behind
changes in willingness to play
sensitivity when touched
Persistent or recurrent changes deserve veterinary assessment.

❤️ THE GOAL ISN’T TO STOP PUPPIES FROM USING THEIR BODIES.

It’s to help those bodies develop well.

Give them opportunities to run.

Let them play.

Let them sniff.

Let them explore.

Build strength, coordination and confidence through varied, age-appropriate movement.

But be cautious about forced, repetitive and unnecessarily high-impact exercise while the skeleton is still developing.

Your puppy has their whole adult life ahead of them.

There is absolutely no rush.

Build the body first. Then ask more of it. 🐾

Te zmiany mogą być czymś więcej niż tylko nawykiem. Postawa może dać nam przydatne wskazówki dotyczące tego, jak pies wykorzystuje swoje ciało i radzi sobie z nim.

📚 Najnowsze badania McGowana i in. (2024) podkreślają znaczenie uwzględniania postawy i dysfunkcji posturalnych w ocenie układu mięśniowo-szkieletowego psów i fizjoterapii weterynaryjnej.

🔍 Co mogą nam powiedzieć zmiany postawy?

🐾 Na postawę wpływają funkcje nerwowo-mięśniowe i mięśniowo-szkieletowe.

🐾 Ból może wpływać na to, jak pies rozkłada ciężar ciała i utrzymuje równowagę.

🐾 Psy mogą kompensować dyskomfort, zmieniając sposób stania lub poruszania się.

🐾 Zmiany postawy ciała mogą być czasami wczesnym sygnałem, że coś jest nie tak.

🐾 Obserwacja postawy ciała w kontekście ruchu może dać nam lepszy ogólny obraz zdrowia układu mięśniowo-szkieletowego psa.

💡 Nie chodzi tylko o obserwowanie psa w ruchu.

Czasami możemy zauważyć istotne zmiany, gdy pies po prostu stoi lub odpoczywa.

Warto zwrócić uwagę na takie rzeczy, jak powtarzające się przenoszenie ciężaru ciała, nierówne stanie, zmiana postawy ciała lub odciążanie jednej kończyny – zwłaszcza jeśli te zmiany są nowe lub trwałe.

🐾 Posture in Dogs: More Than Just a Stance 🐾

Have you ever noticed your dog standing differently, shifting their weight, or adopting an unusual posture?

These changes may be more than just a habit. Posture can give us useful clues about how a dog is using and coping with their body.

📚 Recent research by McGowan et al. (2024) highlights the importance of considering posture and postural dysfunction as part of canine musculoskeletal assessment and veterinary physiotherapy.

🔍 What can changes in posture tell us?

🐾 Posture is influenced by neuromuscular and musculoskeletal function.

🐾 Pain can affect how a dog distributes their weight and maintains balance.

🐾 Dogs may compensate for discomfort by changing the way they stand or move.

🐾 Changes in posture can sometimes be an early clue that something isn’t quite right.

🐾 Looking at posture alongside movement can give us a better overall picture of a dog’s musculoskeletal health.

💡 And it’s not just about watching a dog move.

Sometimes we can spot important changes when a dog is simply standing or resting.

Things such as repeatedly shifting weight, standing unevenly, changing their stance, or unloading one limb may be worth paying attention to—especially if these changes are new or persistent.

Rather than simply looking at what a dog is doing, we want to understand why they may be doing it.

What Does Your Dog’s Coat Flick Tell Us?

One of the questions I’m often asked is, “Can you tell what’s wrong with my dog just by looking at a photo of their coat?”

The answer is no, but a photograph can provide a useful clue.

A coat flick, hair whorl or change in the direction of the coat is not a diagnosis. It is simply one small piece of the clinical puzzle.

During every assessment, I don’t just look at the coat. I assess your dog’s history, posture, gait, muscle tone, joint mobility, tissue quality and movement patterns. Only by putting all these findings together can I identify areas of compensation or dysfunction.

So why do coat flicks occur?

Beneath your dog’s skin is a layer of connective tissue called fascia, which surrounds and connects muscles throughout the body.

When muscles become tight or overworked due to pain, injury or compensation, the fascia can also become restricted and lose its normal ability to glide. This creates increased tension within the tissues beneath the skin.

⬇️ The visual result may be:
• Coat flicks
• Hair whorls
• Changes in hair direction
• Small ridges or areas where the coat separates

⬇️ During my examination I often find:
• Tight, firm muscles with little “give” on palpation
• Reduced tissue mobility and flexibility
• Joint stiffness
• Altered posture
• Changes in gait and movement
• Localised skin twitch responses during treatment

In many of the dogs I’ve treated, these coat changes have been found over areas where there is increased muscle and fascial tension.

The photographs below are from dogs I have treated over the past few years that displayed noticeable changes in their coat patterns, including coat flicks, whorls and altered hair direction. These changes were most commonly seen over the epaxial (back) muscles, particularly in the lumbar (lower back) and sacral (pelvic) regions.

The epaxial muscles play an essential role in supporting and stabilising the spine, controlling posture, transferring forces between the forelimbs and hindlimbs, and allowing the back to flex, extend and rotate during movement.

During my clinical examinations, these areas were often associated with increased muscle tension, reduced tissue mobility and altered movement patterns. Following veterinary assessment and, where appropriate, diagnostic imaging, these dogs were diagnosed with underlying orthopaedic conditions. The coat changes themselves were not the diagnosis, but they appeared to be secondary to compensatory changes within the muscles and fascia caused by pain and altered biomechanics.

This is why I always say that a coat flick is simply one piece of the clinical puzzle. It should never be interpreted in isolation but considered alongside a thorough musculoskeletal assessment and, where necessary, veterinary investigation.

That doesn’t mean every coat flick indicates a problem and many healthy dogs have natural whorls. However, when combined with a thorough clinical assessment, these coat changes can provide another valuable clue to what’s happening beneath the surface.

Fascia is increasingly recognised by many human researchers as the body’s “sixth organ” because of its important roles in movement, force transmission, proprioception and pain perception. Unfortunately coat flicks and altered coat patterns are still not widely recognised by all canine professionals as potential indicators of underlying musculoskeletal compensation, so increasing awareness of these observations is important. So please spread the word.
