🐱 5 Early Signs of Kidney Disease Every Cat Owner Should Know
Kidney disease is common in cats, especially as they get older — and the early signs can be surprisingly easy to miss.
Watch your cat for these 5 warning signs:
💧 1. Increased thirst & urination
Your cat may suddenly drink more water or visit the litter box more often.
🍗 2. Loss of appetite
Eating less, becoming picky, or losing interest in favourite food can be an important warning sign.
⚖️ 3. Weight loss & weakness
Gradual weight loss, reduced activity or unusual tiredness shouldn't be ignored.
👃 4. Bad or unusual breath
A strong, ammonia/urine-like smell from the mouth can occur with advanced kidney dysfunction.
🚽 5. Changes in litter-box habits
Changes in urine volume, frequency, or difficulty urinating need veterinary attention. Straining with little/no urine is an emergency, especially in male cats.
🔬 Early detection matters.
Kidney problems can progress before obvious illness appears. A veterinarian may recommend blood tests, urinalysis, blood pressure measurement and kidney monitoring depending on your cat's age and clinical signs.
❤️ Don't wait until your cat becomes seriously ill.
