The purpose of calf starter is to transition the calf from the milk–feeding period to the dry feeding period. Calf starter is very important to healthy rumen development, good body growth and successful weaning of the calf. Calf starter must be palatable and nutritious.
-Begin offering calf starter three days after the calf is born. Provide a handful of calf starter in a shallow bucket and gradually increase the amount of starter as calves grow. For optimal calf growth and nutrition, feed fresh calf starter and water daily
-Many milk feeding programs for calves suggest a specific quantity of milk or milk replacer be fed two or three times daily for up to six to eight weeks. The daily feeding rate for milk or milk replacer should be based on desired weight gain, calf weight, calf health, and climatic conditions.

Rumen development begins when calves start eating solid feeds that enter the rumen. For dairy calves, that first feed is usually starter grain, which contains starch. The bacteria that colonize the rumen come from the environment and from feeds the calf eats.
-Fibre stretches and enlarges the rumen, digestible carbohydrate supports and stimulates the growth of cells and rumen papillae, (the walls of the rumen) for absorption of the end products of rumen microbial fermentation.
