🔹 FMD — Foot & Mouth Disease
🔹 HS — Hemorrhagic Septicemia
🔹 Black Quarter (BQ)
🔹 Clostridial Diseases
🔹 Theileriosis
🔹 Brucellosis
🔹 Three-Day Sickness (BEF)
🛡️ Prevention is always better than treatment!

🐱 Grooming in Cats — More Than Just Looking Good!
Cats are naturally clean animals and spend a significant part of their day grooming themselves. Grooming is not only about maintaining a beautiful coat—it is an important part of feline health and wellbeing.
✨ Why Is Grooming Important?
Regular grooming helps cats to:
Remove dirt, loose hair and parasites
Prevent excessive matting and hairballs
Improve skin and coat health
Stimulate blood circulation
Allow early detection of wounds, lumps, ticks and skin problems
Reduce stress and promote relaxation
🐾 Common Grooming Needs
Brushing: Long-haired cats may require daily brushing, while short-haired cats usually benefit from brushing a few times per week.
Nail trimming: Overgrown claws can cause discomfort, difficulty walking and even injuries. Nails should be trimmed carefully without cutting the quick.
Ear care: Check the ears regularly for excessive wax, discharge, redness or unpleasant odor. Avoid inserting cotton buds deep into the ear canal.
Dental care: Regular tooth brushing with veterinary-approved products can help reduce plaque and dental disease.
Bathing: Most healthy cats rarely need a bath. Frequent bathing can remove natural oils and cause skin irritation. Bathing is mainly needed when the coat is heavily soiled or on veterinary advice.
⚠️ When Grooming Changes May Indicate Disease
If a cat suddenly stops grooming, grooms excessively, develops bald patches, constantly licks one area, or has a dull/matted coat, it may indicate pain, parasites, allergies, skin disease, stress or another underlying problem.
👉 A change in grooming behavior should never be ignored.
❤️ Vet-Biosphere Tip
Regular grooming is a simple way for owners to build a bond with their cats while also monitoring their health. A well-groomed cat is not necessarily just a beautiful cat—it can be a healthier and happier cat.

🐐 Listeriosis in Sheep & Goats
Listeriosis is an important bacterial disease of sheep and goats caused mainly by Listeria monocytogenes. It can cause nervous disorders, abortions, septicemia and death, making early recognition extremely important.
🧠 Common Clinical Signs
🔹 Circling and loss of balance
🔹 Head tilt and depression
🔹 Facial paralysis and drooping ear/lip
🔹 Excessive salivation
🔹 Difficulty swallowing
🔹 Fever and weakness
🔹 Abortion, stillbirth or weak newborns
🔹 Sudden death in severe cases
🌾 Major Risk Factor
Poor-quality or improperly fermented silage is a well-known source of infection. Spoiled feed, sudden dietary changes and poor hygiene can increase the risk.
💉 Treatment
Early veterinary intervention is essential. Antibiotics such as penicillin or ampicillin may be used under veterinary supervision, along with supportive treatment and correction of dehydration and nutritional problems.
🛡️ Prevention
✅ Provide good-quality, properly fermented silage
✅ Never feed moldy or spoiled feed
✅ Maintain clean feeding and watering areas
✅ Isolate suspected animals immediately
✅ Dispose of aborted fetuses and placentas safely
✅ Maintain good farm hygiene
⚠️ Important: Listeriosis is a zoonotic disease, so farmers and animal handlers should use gloves and proper hygiene when dealing with sick animals, aborted materials or contaminated feed.
Early diagnosis + prompt treatment + good feed management = better outcomes.

🐄 Ketosis in Dairy Animals
Ketosis is a common metabolic disorder in high-producing dairy animals, especially during the early lactation period. It occurs when the animal does not receive enough energy from its diet to meet the high energy demand for milk production. The body then starts breaking down fat, producing excessive ketone bodies.
⚠️ Common Causes
Inadequate energy intake after calving
Sudden increase in milk production
Poor-quality or insufficient feed
Excessive body condition at calving
Sudden dietary changes
Other diseases that reduce feed intake
🔍 Clinical Signs
Reduced appetite, especially refusal of concentrate
Decreased milk production
Loss of body condition and weight
Weakness and reduced activity
Dry f***s or constipation
Sweet/acetone-like smell from breath or milk
In some cases, abnormal behavior such as licking or chewing unusual objects
🧪 Diagnosis
Ketosis can be detected by measuring β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) in blood, milk, or urine. Early detection is important because many cases may be subclinical, showing few obvious signs but still reducing production and fertility.
💊 Management & Prevention
Provide a balanced, energy-rich diet during the transition period.
Ensure good-quality forage and adequate dry matter intake.
Avoid excessive body condition before calving.
Introduce concentrate gradually.
Monitor fresh cows closely during the first few weeks after calving.
Treat affected animals promptly according to veterinary advice; oral propylene glycol is commonly used as an energy supplement in ketosis.
🐄 Key Message
Ketosis is easier and cheaper to prevent than to treat. Proper transition-cow nutrition, good feed management, and early monitoring can significantly reduce ketosis and improve milk production, fertility, and overall herd health.
