Overview
The Chihuahua or Chihuahueño is a Mexican breed of toy dog and the smallest recognized dog breed in the world. It is primarily kept as a companion animal and is characterized by its compact size, large erect ears, and rounded skull.
Genetic studies indicate that the Chihuahua retains a small proportion of pre-Columbian indigenous American dog ancestry, distinguishing it from most modern breeds, which are largely of European origin. The breed was formally recognized in the early twentieth century and has since become one of the most popular companion dogs worldwide.

History

edit
DNA studies suggest that native American dogs entered North America from Siberia approximately 10,000 years ago and were subsequently isolated from other breeds for approximately 9,000 years until the arrival of the first Europeans; these pre-contact dogs exhibited a unique genetic signature that is now nearly extinct. A study based on sequencing of ancient dog genomes, published in 2020, suggests that this pre-colonial ancestry survives in two Mexican breeds, to the extent of about 4% in the Chihuahua (and some 3% in the Xoloitzcuintli). An earlier study (2013) had suggested that the pre-colonial ancestry of the Chihuahua might be as high as 70%.

Colonial records refer to small, nearly hairless dogs from the early 19th century; one account claims that 16th-century conquistadores found them plentiful in the region later known as Chihuahua. In a letter written in 1520, Hernan Cortés wrote that the Aztecs raised and sold little dogs as food.

The American Kennel Club first registered a Chihuahua in 1904, Midget, owned by H. Raynor of Texas.

Characteristics

Chihuahua breed standards specify an "apple-shaped" skull, also referred to as an "apple-dome" conformation.Chihuahuas can appear in almost any coat color or pattern, ranging from solid to marked or splashed, meaning the coat has an underlying darker color with scattered lighter patches. Apple-dome Chihuahuas have large, round eyes and large, erect ears, set in a high, dramatically rounded skull.Chihuahuas have a feature on their heads called the molera, which is a soft spot much like the fontanel found in human infants. It can be hard to see but is easy to feel by touch. The stop is well defined, forming a near 90-degree angle where the muzzle meets the skull.
Dogs of the older "deer" type, with a flat-topped head, more widely set eyes, larger ears, and longer, more slender legs, may still be registered, but the deer head is not considered a separate type in competition and a deer-head dog's digression from the breed standard is considered a fault

Health

edit
The Chihuahua has some genetic predisposition to several neurological diseases, among them atlantoaxial instability, ceroid lipofuscinosis, congenital deafness, congenital hydrocephalus, muscular dystrophy, necrotizing meningoencephalitis, and neuroaxonal dystrophy; it has a mild predisposition to congenital heart disease. In a radiographical study of canine periodontal disease in 2001, the Chihuahua was found to have the lowest incidence of the six breeds studied.
The predisposition to medial patellar luxation is believed to be significant.

Common health concerns in toy breeds, like the chihuahua, is the fact that they are especially prone to hypoglycemia because of their faster metabolism and greater energy demand relative to body weight, making them more vulnerable than larger breeds. Veterinarians often recommend a half teaspoon of honey as this can be used as at home remedies for hypoglycaemia in less severe cases in puppies. Puppies are more susceptible to hypoglycemia if they are taken away from their mothers too soon. Breeders often give the chihuahua puppies this dose of honey daily to help wean them off of their mother and eventually onto dry food.

A 2018 study in Japan of pet cemetery data found the Chihuahua to have an average life expectancy of 11.8 years compared to 15.1 for crossbreeds and 13.7 overall. 2022 UK study on life expectancy of dog breeds based on veterinary data showed the average life expectancy to be 7.91 for the breed compared to 11.82 years for crossbreeds. 2024 UK study found a life expectancy of 11.8 years for the breed compared to an average of 12.7 for purebreeds and 12 for crossbreeds. A 2024 Italian study found a life expectancy of 8.5 years for the breed compared to 10 years overall.

Such tiny dogs often have difficulty whelping. A UK study found the incidence of dystocia in Chihuahua bi***es to be 10.4 times higher than the average for all dogs.

Interesting facts of chicken egg fertility that you may not know.

🪶 It is possible to have a rooster and a hen that are active but a hen can still lay eggs that are not fertile:

I know you may be wondering how, and here is the explanation.
Unlike other birds where you find partners, in chickens there is no courtship or romance. A rooster just forces himself on the hen. So what happens is when a rooster mates a hen, his injected semen is stored in numerous s***m storage tubules (SSTs) located in the area where the hen’s uterus joins the va**na. But this only happens provided the hen likes the rooster. If she doesn’t, she can sq**rt out the semen to avoid hatching his offspring. Therefore a hen may still proceed to lay eggs that are not fertile despite even mating with a rooster every day.

🪶 Even if the hen approves the rooster, some eggs may still not be fertile:

Since the s***m is released shortly after an egg is laid, and each egg takes approximately 25 hours to develop, an egg produced on the day of mating will not be fertile.

An egg laid the next day may or may not be fertile, depending on the timing. An egg laid on the third day definitely should be fertile.

So as you can see your hen can still have the first two or three eggs that are not fertile despite the hen and a rooster having mated.

🪶 You don't need a rooster everyday for the hen to continue laying fertile eggs:

The amount of time during which the hen will continue to lay fertile eggs depends on how much s***m fills the SSTs, which are capable of storing semen from multiple matings and multiple roosters.

Highly productive hens generally remain fertile longer than hens that lay at a slower rate. The average duration of fertility from a single mating is 10 to 14 days.
So it is possible that once your hen has mated with a rooster you can even take the rooster away and you can still have fertile eggs for the next 14 days.

"FARBEXPLOSION BIEM DIAMANTTAUBCHEN"

(Color Explosion in the Diamond Dove)
Oppenborn,G. 1985 Geflugel-Borse #18 p 11

This article was received from D. Rinehart in Ohio back in 1985. It was translated; from the original German article; by W.F. Hollander & printed in the IDS bulletin. Since this article more color mutations have appeared and some understanding of the genetics has occurred.

"In recent years the Diamond Dove has become so popular, and with some new mutations, that a write up has become needed.

In it’s native Australia the 19-20 cm. dove loves the sun, therefore it can’t be considered winter hardy here (Germany).

The first introduction to Europe was in 1868, and into Germany in 1875. In the same year, Dr. K. Russ succeeded in getting the first breeding. Since 1890 they have been bred continuously at the Berlin Zoo. Breeding is relatively simple, and the doves take almost every opportunity to nest. Incubation is 12 to 13 days and the babies get out of the nest at 11 or 12 days. Rearing is usually no problem.

The recognized colors are wild color, silver and brilliant. A new mutant in recent years is the white-rump. The white-rump can be with each of the main colors. Some mixed colors have resulted from unsuitable mating and have been given some unsuitably fantastic names. But such mixed colors should be weeded out because they can’t be successful in shows.

Further, there are white-tailed and white-flighted birds, usually along with the white-rump and in all three colors.

The Isabel color is now fixed and some Isabel birds have a beautiful reddish appearance. Isabel is inherited dominate over brilliant.

All of the above color classes have the normal wing markings, that is, two white round dots on each feather, but there may be instead, tips and lacing.

Then there are pied birds but not yet well marked. They should be fifty-fifty.

Brown (cinnamon), grey, and even yellow varieties are said to exist, but so far only in the rumors – kitchen!

Also so far no pure whites exist. Birds that approach it (white) are only very light brilliants, with red eyes, and their wings still show faint markings.

The diamond dove breeders or at least some of them should be coaxed to prepare a breeding textbook. Then the whys and wherefores could be better understood".

Post script by the editor (Reichenbach): Mixed colors or intermediate patterns or color types result from the combination of non-allelic mutant genes or by selection of changed color types, e.g. the brilliant. Each mutant should be tested with wild type to see whether the segregation occurs according to Mendalian laws, or whether it is irregular.

Post post script: White rump birds have a somewhat lighter ground color than self-colored birds.

Note by W.F. Hollander: silver = dilute?, brilliant = milky?, cinnamon?"
