Reeves’s pheasant (Syrmaticus reevesii) is one of the most distinctive pheasant species kept in aviculture. The male is famous for his extraordinarily long barred tail and golden, black-scaled plumage, while the female has much more subdued brown and buff colouring that provides effective camouflage. In the wild, they inhabit forest and woodland habitats in China and spend much of their time foraging on the ground for seeds, plant material and small invertebrates. Reeves’s pheasant is also classified as Vulnerable, making responsible captive breeding and proper avicultural management particularly meaningful.

These young Swinhoe’s pheasants are already showing one of the most interesting behaviours in young pheasants: constant exploration. Chicks naturally investigate their surroundings, peck at potential food and learn what is safe and edible through foraging behaviour. As they mature, their juvenile appearance will gradually develop into the striking plumage characteristic of adult Swinhoe’s pheasants.

These young Lady Amherst pheasant chicks are still at the early stage of their development, which is why they haven’t developed the spectacular tail feathers adults are famous for. At this age, their behaviour is much more about exploring, foraging, staying close together and learning their surroundings. With time, their juvenile plumage will gradually give way to the striking adult appearance that makes the Lady Amherst pheasant so remarkable.
