My white pheasant has developed a clear preference for this window in his enclosure. The raised position gives him a good view of the surroundings, and he regularly chooses to sit here even when other areas are available. Small preferences like this can reveal a lot about individual bird behavior and how they use their enclosure.

My silver pheasant was naturally foraging from the ground when he slowly started walking toward me, stopping to pick up small bits along the way. This kind of deliberate walking and ground-foraging is a normal part of pheasant behaviour, and becoming comfortable enough to approach during feeding and daily care can show increasing familiarity with the keeper.

My Swinhoe’s pheasants (Lophura swinhoii) are beginning to show more of their characteristic coloration while becoming comfortable feeding around me. As the young birds mature, the male’s plumage develops toward the striking blue, white and red pattern that makes this species so distinctive. Swinhoe’s pheasants naturally forage for seeds, fruits, plant material and small invertebrates, often feeding close to the ground.

Young silver pheasants can look surprisingly similar, making it difficult to distinguish males from females at an early age. As they mature, their appearance begins to diverge: males develop the characteristic silver-white plumage, darker markings and dramatically longer tail, while females retain a more understated brown plumage and shorter tail. This pair shows the striking difference that develops with maturity.

My silver pheasant pair showing one of the most striking examples of sexual dimorphism in pheasants. The male is easily recognized by his predominantly white body, dark crest and contrasting black markings, while the female has predominantly brown plumage that provides much better camouflage. Same species, but remarkably different appearances.
