Cooter turtle🐢

The Cooter (genus Pseudemys) is a group of large, freshwater basking turtles native to the central and southeastern United States and northern Mexico. They are closely related to sliders and painted turtles, often sharing the same basking logs in the wild.

Key Characteristics
🎨Appearance: They have dark green to black shells (carapaces) with intricate yellow or orange patterns. Many species have a distinctive backward "C" mark on their shell scales.
🔴Size: Cooters are among the largest freshwater turtles in North America, typically reaching 10 to 16 inches in length, though some can grow up to 17 inches. Females are significantly larger than males.
🥦Diet: While juveniles are often omnivorous and eat insects or small fish, adults are almost exclusively herbivorous, feeding on aquatic plants and algae.
😳Behavior: They are highly aquatic and shy, quickly sliding into the water at the first sign of danger. They spend much of their day basking on logs or rocks to regulate their body temperature.
