We humans love labels.

“My dog hates small dogs.”
“My dog hates big dogs.”
“He hates Huskies.”
“She hates Yorkies.”
“He hates men in hoodies.”

But does your dog really hate the breed or the individual?

Dogs don’t walk into a space thinking, “That’s a Husky. I don’t like Huskies.”

They’re constantly taking in information we often overlook: body language, movement, scent, posture, tension, and intention.

In other words: What are you feeling? What are you communicating? What are you trying to do?

Kaya alangan ako when people tell me their dog “hates” a certain breed. Sometimes, what the dog is responding to isn’t the label we see. It’s the energy and behavior behind it.

And yes, kasama tayo doon.

Our dogs are reading us, too. The tension we carry on the leash, the way we react when another dog approaches, the things we anticipate, and the signals we unknowingly give them can all influence how they experience an interaction.

So before we decide that our dog hates that kind of dog, maybe we should ask a different question:

What is my dog actually responding to?

Hey guys. This is Marvin. He’s a home-service groomer, and he’s been grooming Benson and many of my clients’ dogs for a while now.

What I appreciate most about Marvin isn’t just how good he is with a pair of scissors. It’s how well he understands dogs.

He knows when to take his time. When to give a dog space. When to push through something and when to back off. He reads their body language naturally. Ang nakakatawa, hindi niya ata alam gaano siya kagaling magbasa ng aso. Talang hasa lang siya sa ilang taon na ginagawa to.

Some of the most aggressive cases I've handled, siya nag papaligo. Bilib ako kay Marvin talaga.

Bella's job is to teach the pup healthy boundaries, my job is to coach the human in making good decisions and practicing calm leadership. How cool that we get to do all this?

A healthy relationship doesn’t mean your dog needs to be with you every second. A dog who can settle comfortably when you leave, and calmly greet you when you return, has learned that separation is safe.

Fulfill the instinct. Build the trust. Give them the confidence to be okay without you.

Gumising kami ni Benson ng 6am kanina para mag lakad ng malayo kasi alam ko aabutin ako ng siam siam sa bike shop ngayong araw. Iwan siya sa bahay habang repack lahat sa Ave Rat—all bearings regreased, new rotors, pads, and a bling chain too. 😁
