It's such an honor to illustrate for something passionate. ๐ถ๐ฑ๐ Let's help in any ways we can. Humans For Animals PH
Our Pact with the Pack.
A long, long time ago, tens of thousands of years before present, humans and dogs made a pact.
We told the then wolf-dogs, "if you help us, we will help you.
Fight beside us to hunt and slay mammoths, which will be meat for our families to eat,
and we, in turn, will give reindeer for you and your pack to feast on;
Protect our home, and we will let you in, shelter you from the cold;
Draw our sleds, and we will take you with us wherever we go, you will not get left behind;
Warn us when there are intruders, and we will also not allow any harm to befall you;
Help us bear heavy loads, and we will carry you when you are injured and nurse you back to health;
Protect our women and children from marauders, and your pups will have a place in our hearth, to grow strong and have a safe refuge..."
It has been said that because dogs helped women in domestic duties such as carrying food and firewood, the womens' fertility improved. And so with the help of dogs, we grew our population and territory, and it can be argued that modern man flourished with the help of these beings; the first animals we made an alliance with.
This pact entailed a deep empathy for each other. For our partnership to have been successful, humans and dogs needed to be observant of the ways of one anotherโbehaviors, postures, gestures, mannerisms, vocalizationsโand to be able to correctly interpret the emotions behind them, such as affection, fear, curiosity, hunger, suffering, and contentment.
In fact, it is theorized that dogs developed the muscles and color of and around their eyes, for better gaze communication not just with their own species, but with humans as well. It allowed us to hunt together better. If you observe dogs, it is immediately apparent how expressive their eyes are, and how strong they make eye contact with us. It is one of the things that lithified the intense connection, the deep bond between our species.
At present, dogs still observe us keenly and try to understand our actions, always always seeking to please. But we humans seem to have forgotten this pact. We now have dominion over the whole world, but we have neglected our allies who made that possible, the ones whom we made a covenant with
to protect,
to keep safe,
to understand,
and to be a loyal companion to.
Every time you see a stray dog, especially the ones who are abused or abandoned, it is a sad reminder that we have forgotten our age-old alliance and promise to them.
Hopefully, this will compel us to start honoring dogs again.
Our longtime companions.
Our best friends since time immemorial.
