Goodmorning friday 😘😘😘
A call for emergency !
🩸 Canine Ehrlichiosis: Yoona's Case
Patient: Yoona, 8-year-old Shih Tzu
Presenting complaints:
Severe bleeding from the nose (epistaxis)
Loss of appetite (anorexia)
Pale gums (pale mucous membranes)
Positive result for blood parasite on a 3-way test kit
Based on Yoona's clinical signs and positive test result, ehrlichiosis is a significant suspected cause of her condition. However, further laboratory testing is important to assess the severity of the infection and confirm the diagnosis.
1. What is ehrlichiosis in dogs?
Canine ehrlichiosis
is an infectious disease caused by bacteria of the genus Ehrlichia. The most common cause of canine ehrlichiosis is Ehrlichia canis, a type of intracellular, tick-borne bacterium that primarily infects monocytes, a type of white blood cell.
Once inside the dog's body, the bacteria multiply within these cells and can affect the immune system, blood cells and bone marrow.
The disease can cause:
Thrombocytopenia: A decrease in platelets, which are essential for blood clotting.
Anemia: A decrease in red blood cells, which carry oxygen throughout the body.
Bleeding disorders: Including nosebleeds, bleeding gums, bruising and blood in urine or f***s.
Bone marrow suppression: In severe or chronic cases, the bone marrow may produce insufficient blood cells.
Ehrlichiosis can occur in acute, subclinical and chronic forms, and severe cases may become life-threatening.
