🐶🪡 NEEDLE FOREIGN BODY IN A DOG

Sometimes, the smallest objects can become the biggest emergencies. Benjie, a male shih tzu was brought to our clinic due to neck swelling and repeated gagging, particularly while eating.

🔎DIAGNOSTIC FINDING
Radiographic examination confirmed the presence of a needle foreign body in the oropharyngeal region. Because of the sharp nature and location of the object, careful removal was necessary to prevent further tissue injury.

🩺PROCEDURE AND OUTCOME ✨
A laryngoscope was carefully used to visualize the oropharyngeal area and facilitate safe retrieval of the needle. The foreign body was successfully removed without the need of surgical intervention.

⚠️REMINDER FOR PET OWNERS
If your pet develops:
🔸Difficulty swallowing
🔸Excessive drooling
🔸Neck or Throat swelling
🔸Reluctant to eat
🔸Pawing at the mouth

🚫Never attempt to remove a suspected needle or sharp foreign body at home.
🚫Do not induce vomiting
🚫Do not force food or water to push the object down.

✅PREVENTION IS THE KEY!
Keep potentially dangerous objects safely away from pets:
🔹Needles and pins
🔹Thread, yarn and strings
🔹Fish hooks
🔹Scissors and sharp tools
🔹Household waste

🐾Early recognition, appropriate imaging and safe removal can prevent a small foreign object from becoming a life-threatening emergency.

🐾 Dagul’s Road to Recovery 🐾

Meet Dagul, a 6-month-old male puppy who was brought to our clinic after being involved in a vehicular accident.

He sustained a complete fracture of the distal femur of his left hind limb, accompanied by severe soft tissue damage and extensive necrosis. Portions of the fractured bone were already exposed, making the limb non-viable. After careful assessment, immediate amputation of the affected limb was elected to prevent further complications and give Dagul the best chance at recovery. 🩺

Dagul remained hospitalized for almost two weeks. With continuous medical management and close monitoring, he showed significant improvement during his stay.

He was discharged on the 12th day post-operation and continued his recovery at home. His dedicated owner consistently brought him back to the clinic every other day for laser therapy, supporting the healing of the surgical site. ❤️

Throughout his recovery, Dagul continued to show remarkable progress:

✨ Good appetite
✨ Bright and active
✨ Able to stand and walk using his remaining three legs
✨ Progressive healing of the surgical site

By the 20th day post-operation, complete healing and closure of the soft tissue was achieved. 🎉🐾

Dagul’s recovery is a testament not only to his resilience, but also to the dedication of his owner in ensuring he received consistent postoperative care.

Losing a limb didn’t stop Dagul from moving forward. Three legs were all he needed for a second chance. 🐶❤️🐾

Apply cool water (not iced pack) to abdomen, inguinal region and paw pads
