A bunny that keeps licking itself is usually engaging in normal, healthy self-grooming behavior to keep its coat clean. Rabbits are naturally very clean animals and spend a significant portion of their day on this activity.
However, if the licking becomes excessive, to the point of causing bald spots, skin irritation, or sores (known as overgrooming or barbering), it can indicate an underlying issue.
π°Normal Grooming Reasonsπ°
Hygiene: Rabbits meticulously lick their fur to remove dirt, debris, and loose hair, which is crucial for their health and helps prevent hairballs.
Temperature Regulation: Grooming helps maintain the insulating properties of their fur, keeping them comfortable in different temperatures.
Comfort: Licking can be a self-soothing behavior, similar to how a child might use a "blankie".
