Ayon sa United Nations Environment Programme, nakakapag-produce ang buong mundo ng halos 300 milyong tonelada ng plastic kada taon at katumbas ito ng bigat ng buong populasyon ng mundo.

Nasa 9% lamang rin ng mga nagamit na plastics ang nare-recycle. Ang malaking porsyento, napupunta sa mga basurahan o inaanod sa karagatan.

Kapag hindi napigil ang tumataas na demand sa plastics, maaaring mas marami pa ang plastic sa dagat kaysa sa mga isda sa taong 2050.
