⚠️ Uh oh, we're in the dog box ⚠️

We've received a furrr-mal complaint from Phoenix and Benji.

Their grievance is that apparently everyone is off enjoying the long weekend, well, except them.

The boys would like it noted that:
🧡 They are extremely handsome.
🧡 They are excellent company.
🧡 They have been patiently waiting for their forever home.
🧡 This situation is becoming "quite ridiculous", according to Benji.

From their observation post, they've watched people come and go, cars leave driveways, and weekends unfold, all while they remain tragically unadopted.

Benji has described this as "a complete administrative failure." Phoenix, however, remains optimistic and believes their forever family is simply running late.

While we undertake an investigation, Phoenix and Benji would like to wish everyone safe travels and a wonderful weekend.

And if your travels happen to take you in the direction of adopting two gorgeous cats, we'd be delighted to help resolve this complaint once and for all by processing your adoption application🧡🐾

To the SPCA..

THANK YOU!

We were one of two cat rescue organizers to be given the ability to issue vouchers for cat desexing + microchipping in Aotearoa NZ this year AND IT HAS BEEN COMMUNITY CHANGING 🥹❤️

We have issued vouchers to over 200 local kitties this year. From solo parents who received kittens for the kids as "gifts", to senior citizens who took on strays, we have been helping a lot of whanau and quietly desexing a whole heap of cats across Whangārei.

We aren't fantastic with numbers but we can imagine how many unwanted litters that has preventing, and roaming+mating behaviors stopped too.

Thank you SPCA!

🐾 Meet Jaffa 🐾

Hi everyone, my name is Jaffa! 🧡

I've inherited my good looks from my mum, so if you think she's beautiful, you'll probably think I'm pretty too. I'm a little bit shy when I first meet new people, but once I know you're kind, I really enjoy gentle pats and cuddles. My fun fact is I was born with no tail.

Every day I'm growing in confidence and learning all the important kitten things, like chasing toys, pouncing on my siblings, and exploring the world around me. I'm still finding my brave side, but I'm discovering that playing is lots of fun!

A big thank you to everyone who has joined our kitten waiting list. We have been overwhelmed by the interest in our little ones and will be in touch with applicants soon as we work through matching kittens to their perfect homes. 🐱💕

Hi friends, Lt Dan here.

I've had a very busy helping the rescue and there is lots of mews! First, I spent a weekend hanging out with my mates Benji and Phoenix. They're pretty cool cats and about the same age as me, and honestly, I don't understand why they're still waiting for their forever home. We had fun playing, sleeping, and generally being adorable. If you're looking for a lovely companion, you should definitely meet them.

Now for the really important news... I got adopted 🥰
After months of dedicated effort, strategic rescues, selective leg rubs, and making it abundantly clear that I knew that I belonged exactly where I was, I finally convinced my foster mum the Cat Distribution Centre makes no mistakes. Some people call it a "foster fail". I call it the world's slowest excellent decision-making.

While I've been busy securing my future, Dolly, Timmy and Sammy have been settling into their foster home. They're learning all about the important things in life, like comfy beds, regular meals, toys, and how to be proper cats. They're doing really well and making great progress.

The younger crowd had a busy weekend too. Goose, Jaffa, Marmite, Honey and Yogi all had their photos taken and are ready to start introducing themselves. Keep an eye on the page this week as their profiles and details are shared.

The good news keeps coming. We currently have lots of people waiting for our younger kittens, which means that many of the babies coming into care already have a queue of interested adopters waiting to meet them.

Because of that, we'd love to hear from anyone who knows of kittens that may need help. If you have kittens, or know someone who does, and there isn't a clear plan in place for their future, please get in touch with Whangārei Cat Rescue. We'd love to have a chat about how we might be able to help.

Thank you to everyone who supports the rescue, fosters, adopts, volunteers, and shares our posts.

That's the end of my update. I'd stay and chat longer, but now that I'm officially adopted, I need to go find something "important" to sit on and completely ignore my mum.

Love, Dan ❤️

🐾 Rescue Update 🐾

It's been a busy week here at Whangārei Cat Rescue!

We've welcomed three lovely new kitties into care who are completing their quarantine period before settling into their foster home. They are so new they don't have names yet! We will post a further update once we have had a chance to see their personalities shine through.

We also have two adorable residents still waiting patiently for their forever families. Benji and Phoenix are adoption-ready and looking for homes of their own. These two wonderful cats have so much love to give and would make fantastic companions.

Meanwhile, our Family of Five.... the kittens have just reached the grand old age of 3 weeks. They're growing fast, becoming more adventurous every day, and keeping their mum on her toes and their foster carers well entertained!

As we head into kitten season, if you find your cat has an unplanned pregnancy, please reach out to us as early as possible. We understand that these situations can happen, and we're happy to have a compassionate, judgement-free conversation about the options available.

Every desexed cat helps reduce the number of unwanted kittens needing homes, and every responsible choice makes a difference.

Thank you to everyone who supports, fosters, adopts, donates, and shares our posts. We couldn't do it without you. ❤️

While they wait for their happily ever after, Benji and Phoenix have been keeping each other company with plenty of playtime, cuddles, and kitten friendship. 🐾 Just look at these two together. Aren't they adorable?

🐾💕 We know we're a cat rescue... but let's be honest, we love ALL animals! 💕🐾

That's why we're giving a big shout-out to our friends at Animates Whangārei and their fantastic Puppy School programme! 🐶🎓

Here's something every cat lover can appreciate... a well-socialised, well-trained dog is much more likely to become a respectful housemate for the cats in their life! 🐱❤️🐶 Whether your home already has cats, dogs, or a mix of both, setting puppies up with good manners and confidence from the start helps create happier, safer multi-pet households.

So, if there's a new puppy in your family, why not check out Puppy School at https://www.animates.co.nz/pet-services/puppy-dog-school and support a business that does so much for local rescue animals?

Animates are wonderful supporters of Whangārei Cat Rescue. They generously allow us to host our events in-store, act as a donation drop-off point for all the goodies that help our rescue kitties and provide great advice and support to many of our adopters as they welcome a new feline family member home.

Thank you, , for being such amazing partners in animal welfare. We couldn't do what we do without community-minded businesses like you! 🐾

**SPECIAL NEEDS KITTEN - PLEASE READ CAREFULLY**

Hi, I'm Lieutenant Dan. My foster mum calls me Doodlebug.
I sometimes help her write our adoption posts, but she said I had to do my own 🤷‍♀️

My Wrongs (I have a lot of them)
- I am deaf. You can shout, whisper, sing — I won’t hear any of it.
- My back legs and hips work like a shopping trolley with one dodgy wheel.
- I have a heart murmur.
- I am currently trialing some medication, and I don't like how it tastes.
- I try to use the litter box every single time… but I only succeed about 85%.
- I climb everything including you. I cannot climb down. You will have to rescue me.
- I use my intelligence for mischief.
- I am willfully naughty (just ask the vet nurse)
- I cannot read other animals’ social cues, but I need company.
- I am really good at hide and seek.
- I do not snuggle, I barely tolerate pats, and I HATE being picked up.
- I am rude to some people, indifferent to most and use my claws to show my opinions. I like approximately 2 people.

If you’re still reading, congratulations. Most give up halfway through this list.

My Rights (the good bits)
- I know sign language and vibration cues.
- I am brave and full of personality.
- I am resilient.
- I am absolutely unforgettable.

My Ideal Home (you must tick every box)
- A strictly indoor home or fully controlled outdoor access that is 100% escape proof.
- Adult humans who are home often with a good routine.
- A safe environment with climbing options I can manage.
- Calm, gentle and tolerant animal friend.
- People who enjoy training, adapting, and problem‑solving.
- Experience caring for special‑needs animals.
- Patience of a saint, sense of humour, and commitment — I am not a starter kitten, I won't grow out of it, and I am not a project.

My foster mum loves me. I know it, I feel it, I see it in the way she rescues me from situations, cleans up my after me without sighing, learns signs for me, and laughs because I am a menace. She will be extremely hard to convince you are the one. If you are not perfect, then I will stay home with my foster pack.

Email me at [email protected] for your application.

🐾 Kitten Season Has Begun! 🐾

The first little arrivals of the season are here! We currently have five one-week-old kittens safely in our care, along with their beautiful mumma, and they are all doing well. Meet Jaffa, Goose, Marmite, Yogi and Honey❤️

Over the coming days and weeks, we'll be working our way through our existing waiting list of potential adopters as more kittens become available.

If you've been thinking about adding a feline friend to your family and would like to be considered for future adoptions, we'd love to hear from you. Please get in touch to register your interest.

We also know that it can be overwhelming for owners of unplanned litters. If you have a pregnant mumma cat and are unsure about your options, we are happy to have a chat about what support may be available and help you explore the best possible outcome for mum and her kittens.

Thank you to everyone who supports rescues, foster care, and responsible pet ownership. Kitten season is always a busy time, but together we can help make a difference. 🐱💕
