🐇 Yesterday was World Rabbit Day, and this year, we’re wishing for something a bit different.

Earlier in the year, we asked NAWAC and MPI, under the Official Information Act, what was happening with the Code of Welfare for Rabbits. We’ll come back to the OIA another day, but what we can say right now is that this government has no intention of progressing the Companion Animal Codes of Welfare.

So this year, our wishes are simple: we hope you’re enrolled to vote. ✅️

We hope you’ll encourage your friends and whānau to enrol, too. ✅️

We hope you’ll take the time to engage with your local MPs and ask what they’re doing to raise animal welfare standards in our country. Then, when November comes, we hope you’ll make your values heard at the ballot box 🗳

Because until we have a government that prioritises animal welfare, nothing can change.

And, to be honest, until companion rabbits are appropriately represented in the Animal Welfare Act—and those of us who rescue them have a legal framework to back up our mahi—rabbit rescue in this country will never be sustainable.

So please, enrol. Engage. And when the time comes, please vote. 🐰 ✅️

❄️ It’s not every day that we get to see snow in Pōneke! But as magical as it is, we couldn't stop thinking about everyone who will spend tonight outside without the means of seeking warmer shelter - especially the rabbits who are stuck in flimsy, drafty hutches 😔 It’s weather events like these that prove why it's so important to have high standards for housing. Everyone deserves a warm, dry home!

🐰 Whether your rabbits are inside or out tonight, please take some time to ensure they have access to extra bedding to snuggle down into. With more snow expected to reach low levels overnight, they'll certainly need it!! 👀

‼️ Update: Winslow is home!! Thank you for everyone who looked out for him, in the end, Winslow come to the very wise conclusion that there's no place like home and made his own way back safely this morning.

Winslow has gone missing from Domanski Crescent overnight, 15/16th July.

As an agouti coat, Winslow could easily be mistaken for a wild rabbit. This adds another level of concern and his whānau would very much love to have him home safe asap - including his bonded sister, who is missing him.

Winslow is part Flemish Giant, so if you see any large wild-looking bunnies in the Ōwhiro Bay area, please get in touch 🐇

Thankfully, Winslow is microchipped.

We may be a rabbit rescue, but right now our bird friends need help 🐰🕊

Empire provides quality, experienced veterinary care to birds nationwide through their telemedicine service, but this service is currently at risk.

Our team have used Avian Empire many times over to access care for our own birds and for rescues alike - including a pigeon we found injured while out on the road. Coincidentally, we found the little guy on Bunny Street 👀

With so few Avian Vets in the country, we know first hand that telemedicine is a vital resource that protects the welfare needs of birds in Aotearoa.

Please join us in signing this petition 🐓🦆🐦

Protect Access to Veterinary Care for Birds in NZ

‼️ With the weather set to get worse this evening, please make arrangements now for your outdoor animals. Where possible, please bring them inside. Don't wait until it's too late!

------- 🐰 -------

📸 Our friends Clover and Arlo would not be alive today had they been sleeping in their outdoor enclosure on April 20th. Thankfully, their humans had snuggled them up inside the night before, so they were within reach at 4am when they woke to discover rapidly rising floodwaters taking over their home.

Clover and Arlo were quickly placed inside a washing basket and evacuated from the house ontop of their human's head, from floodwaters that had quickly surpassed chin height.

Their sturdy, purpose-built outdoor enclosure was already completely submerged before anyone knew what was happening, and was ultimately destroyed by the force of the water and the debris that came with it.

Even if your rabbits prefer being outside, Clover and Arlo's ordeal is evidence that a little temporary discomfort is worth the price for safety.

------ 🐰 -------

‼️ Please reach out if you are struggling to house your outdoor animals (rabbits, guineapigs, or birds) inside tonight. The Burrow has spaces available until tomorrow afternoon, and we are lucky to have a network of amazing people who can also offer short-term emergency stays.

Alternatively, we may be able to provide you with temporary indoor fencing, or you can follow the link in the comments below to find handy tips on how to set up emergency spaces in your home.

‼️ There is a MANDATORY EVACUATION ORDER in place for waterfront properties along the south coast, including Ōwhiro Bay, Island Bay, Houghton Bay, and Breaker Bay.

If you are evacuating with small animals this evening and will struggle to find somewhere suitable for them to stay, please PM us.
🐰🕊🐟🐢🐓

Recent weather events serve as a reminder to us all to have an emergency evacuation plan that includes our animals. Swipe through to find out what a grab bag for rabbits should look like 👀

‼️ Seeking information about a hit and run car crash that occurred on Sunday, 24th May, at 5.00pm on Glenmore Ave outside of the Kārori tunnel ‼️

This is not the post I thought we would be making today. After a seven hour day on the road transporting rabbits and delivering supplies to fosterers yesterday, we should be sharing photos and updates. Instead, we're hoping you can help us find the driver who crossed the centreline and hit us at speed.

Thankfully, Helen was able to swerve just enough that instead of crashing into us head on, the driver crashed into the front wheel, travelled the length of our car, and then fled the scene despite significant damage to their own vehicle.

‼️ If you were in the Kārori/Kelburn area around 5pm last night, did you see a blue Ford hatchback with a decent chunk of the front drivers side missing?

Do you have a dash cam that might have captured the car around Glenmore Street, the Kārori tunnel, Chaytor Street, or Raroa Crescent?

If so, please check! Because we would love to return this hubcap and wing mirror.... 👀

Secondly, if you happen to know of a Toyota FunCargo (or similar) car for sale, please let us know! It must be disability-friendly; with enough space for a wheelchair/walker in the back, and a side opening boot.

Finally, in case the people who did stop to make sure we were okay happen to read this - Thank you again! You restored in us our belief that for every awful human, there are three amazing ones. You really made a difference last night.

We're sore, we're upset, but we're alive and feeling very grateful for it! 🐇
