From stressed to smooth calving – a Waikato farmer’s story. 🐮🤠

The 2024–2025 season was tough for John Aarts, with around 20% of cows affected by mastitis and high SCC. Working closely with his vet Christopher, John decided to try a different approach at dry-off using Teatseal®.

The result? Clinical mastitis dropped to just 5% the following season – a 75% reduction! With fewer cases to manage, calving became much easier and less stressful for the whole farm.

As John says, “it worked for us.” And that’s exactly why proactive herd health planning pays off.

Big congratulations to Charlotte and Izzy on graduating veterinary school! 🎓🐾
We welcomed both talented new graduate mixed vets to the Anexa team in February. Charlotte is based between Gordonton and Ngāruawāhia, and Izzy joined the Morrinsville clinic.
From scholarship achievements to a love of goats, painting, the outdoors, and caring for animals big and small, these two are already bringing so much enthusiasm and passion to the team.
We’re incredibly proud to support the next generation of veterinarians and can’t wait to see Charlotte and Izzy grow in their careers and become familiar faces within our clinics. 💚🩷

We are incredibly proud to congratulate Dr Katrina Roberts on being appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the King’s Birthday Honours List for services to the dairy industry and the community.
For more than 20 years, Dr Katrina has made a significant impact through her veterinary work, dairy industry research, and dedication to mentoring young veterinarians. Her pioneering work in heifer teat sealing has improved herd health across New Zealand and greatly reduced the need for antibiotic treatments.
Alongside her professional achievements, Katrina has devoted countless hours to community organisations, local sports, and Cambridge Riding for the Disabled.
This honour is a well-deserved recognition of her outstanding contributions to both the dairy industry and the wider community. Congratulations Treen! 💚

Getting teatsealing right in heifers isn’t just about the product – it’s about preparation, people, and process.
A smooth, low-stress day in the shed makes a big difference to outcomes, safety, and efficiency. That starts well before teatsealing day with proper training, calm handling, and a setup that works for your system.
Teatsealing can significantly reduce mastitis risk at calving and early lactation – but it’s one piece of the puzzle. Good hygiene, nutrition, and close monitoring still matter.

A few practical reminders:
• Heifers should be familiar with the shed (noise, lights, platform, people) – walk them through beforehand, have them stopped, rowed up, lights on, and someone in the pit (even light contact like touching udders can help reduce surprises on the day).
• Only row up small groups (around 10 at a time rather than the full mob) to keep things calm and controlled.
• Plan for at least two capable staff on handling.
• Mixing in a few experienced cows can help settle the mob.
• Identify and manage any existing mastitis cases separately.
• Sedation won’t fix poor handling – calm animals are key.

Done well, teatsealing is a high-return preventative tool that sets heifers up for a strong start to their first lactation.
